So I bought a MacBook.

Rather than starting a new thread, I'm planning on taking the plunge to a 13 inch MBP in the very near future (February's payday!). Assuming that we don't hear anything from Apple in the meantime about an updated MBP, would you guys take the plunge now if you were me, or hold off for a couple more months?

I would also hold off for a few months. Although the problem with the Sandy Bridge processors may mean you have to wait a bit longer. You know that if you buy one now and a new one comes out in a month you wil feel slightly annoyed.

I know, that's what I'm thinking - it's just frustrating! Particularly now that there have been SandyBridge recalls, it seems likely to be a longer wait.

OP seems to have had the same experience I did when I bought my refurb 13" uMacbook in mid 2009. It blew me and any other windows laptops away in terms of useability and sheer build quality. Hell I still use it today more than I do my Win7 desktop rig. It was my first OSX/Mac experience though, and I wish I had opted for a 15" model instead.

Gack, I'm so desperate to get one but I can't help but feel waiting until the refresh is wise...

Woe betide!

I was stuck with the same dilemma, in the end I just went for it. Yes when the refresh models come out it'll be out of date, but in all honesty I don't care, it does everything I want to do and a hell of a lot more besides.

Unless you're the sort of person who HAS to have the newest gadget for e-peen purposes or you only want a Mac to show off with, I can't really see the point in waiting for a refresh. Especially when we have no idea what the refresh will involve and when it'll come, to be honest that it something about Apple that really irritates me.

In the end to me it seems very risky to wait for a new product you have absolutely no information on when you know the current product meets you needs. As an example, there are a lot of rumours (most probably not true) that the optical drive will be removed and the HDD possibly switch for an SSD (maybe with the ability to add another HDD in place of the optical drive). Now that may suit those who care only about speed and e-peen, but for me it'd be of no use whatsoever as I need storage space boot speed.

Anyway, I started to go on a bit so I'll end there. Just my 2p on the whole buy now of wait argument.

Hmm, didn't realise the Air was 1400x900...starts to make that tempting as well. I don't necessarily need the extra grunt of the MBP, the main reason I want it over the Air is the backlit keyboard.

Connectivity-wise, does the 13" Air only lose out on a firewire port over the 13" MBP?

I have had my macbook for a few months now and I have to say I love it so much. I do wish I had bought a macbook pro now.

But on the plus side now I know up much I love the OSX. When they eventually do the updates to the macbook pros I will sell on my macbook and upgrade to a macbook pro.

I now own:
iPhone 4
iPad
Macbook
Time Capsule

Love them all so much. I have been thinking about buying an iMac but I think I am going to stick with my PC. As well for me gaming is easier on the PC and carry on using my macbook for media.

Tempted to take the plunge too - I know this must get asked a million and one times... but Antiviruses on macs - are they affected as much or are they a hell of a lot more secure?

No need. All my research led me to the same conclusion many have, which is don't bother. Not only is OSX more secure, there is also very little malware out there that effects the mac.

As long as you're not daft, you'll be absolutely fine without AV.
