So I'm getting a 5850 Twin Frozr II tomorrow and selling the 5770 soon, but I'd like to chuck them in CrossFire just to say I've done it so I can see what it's like. Thing is, I know my mobo is x16/x4 but apparently it's only a 5-10% decrease in performance... so, what's the best way to put the cards? 5850 in x16 or x4?

I was thinking x4 as it down scales to the slowest card doesn't it? So the slowest card in the fastest slot would benefit SLIGHTLY more... Or am I completely wrong?

5850 in 16 but the 5770 will O/C to 5850 speeds (try to anyway!).
The second card clocks to primary cards' speeds
Watch your temps.
AFAIK, you can't x fire the cards - be sure to tell us if you do!

Same chip but different manufacturers will work even if clocked differently, or different boards. Different chips as you have won't work though.

you can crossfire any 5series card with any 5series card it doesnt matter

5850 will stay at 5850 speeds the 5770 will stay at that speeds
you can clock them seperately, its not an SLI setup

just 3dmark them switch them over and 3dmark them again see whats best

everything you need is on the disk i sent

also doesnt matter really but the frozr 2 can be blocked on the bottom by another card it maxes out at 65c at 30-45% fan speed silent
they do not get hot at all. 40c less than my xfx 5850

Not according to AMD ? :

You could if the motherboard had a Lucid Hydra chip on it - any cards work in combination on that ( just not very well )

Anyway as for speeds, they could be clocked to whatever speed you like, but afaik the faster card will always be waiting on the slower card finishing its frame / segments.

thats realy wierd ive tried a 5870 with a 5850 worked fine sure i tired 5770 earlier on the year, might be my brain tricking me tho :D

Of course it would, as the other guys above said - cards of the same series will work together ( first 2 didgits of their model must match ) :

2 58xxx cards will work, 2 57xx cards will work, 2 56xx cards will work, etc...

Yes they can, both start with 58xx :) The op is trying to use a 5770 with a 5850.

Only exception is 5970+5870 trifire, as the 5970 is 2 clocked down 5870's afaik.

edit I was replying to The Halk, not you Cleecooo
