as per my previous thread it seems ive bought a faulty hd ati 3870x2 card.

With the 6 and 8 pin leads plugged in the card does nothing and the pc doesnt turn on.
With just the 6 pin plugged in the pc starts up, doesnt give a display, the fan is spinning fast and loud aswell as 3 red leds coming on on the card.

ive tried the card in both my x16 and x4 pci slot, ive tried just one stick of ram, ive tried unplugging the hdd and disk drive, ive tried two different 8 pin leads in both sockets on my modular psu all still givin the same above result.

is this fixable? is there something else that could be to blame? is it worth anything to anyone as it is?

thanks in advance.

Hi,

Do you have a spare video card you can use to try and narrow down the cause of the problem? Are you sure your psu is not the issue?

hi, ive tried the 8 pin pci lead in two different sockets on the psu not sure if that rules out the psu?

ive got an hd5450 on its way to try, i hope it works as il be at a loss as to what to do if not.

will report back soon. thanks

ok so ive found out what these 3 red led`s represent, d25, d31, d28.

D25 : ASIC Thermal fail / Overheat

D28 : External A power fail / 8 pin External power fail

D31 : External B power fail / 6 pin External power fail

so i take it from this the cards buggered?

So, the 3870X2 is knackered which is a shame, they're still actually pretty decent cards. At least you now know where you stand, glad you got it sorted. :)

massive problems now, the thing wont POST, it does do then it doesnt, for example when i put the 5450 in earlier it fired up, i installed win7, it asked me to reboot to continue installation but although the pc span up and rebooted i had no picture. i have to change and unplug random things in the pc then boot it and and hope it randomly gives me a picture which it has a few time, iv got the bios then a screen asking if i want to change from sata to acpi then nothing, blank screen, iv got onto the destop once.

when it first booted up the picture was clear, second time i managed to get a picture it was dodgey then after it was barely readable.

ive take ram out, swapped it around, unplugged the hdd, tried another hdd, unplugged the cd drive, i unplugged the two modular cables from the psu (one for fans and the other for the cd drive and hdd) switched it on and it showed me the bios then went black, rebooted and nothing.

im thinking now that maybe the 3780x2 isnt faulty and that its my psu? ive tried a dvi cable, vga cable and hdmi cable all the same effect

advice greatly appreciated guys.

completely at a loss now guys, only thing i will say is im trying this on a 32inch tv and a 50 inch tv, would that at all make any difference to this? i have access to a normal pc monitor just waiting for it to become free to use.

i have 3 but theyre all tiny stock ones from small form factor pc`s with ery short cables sono good :(

all my mates have laptops, typical!

im convinced its down to the bios being set to onboard graphics and not a card but how would i sort that out?

martynpd im using a 5450 card now mate

no problem dude, surely someone must know how to sort this problem out though :(
