DJMK4's new car checking thread (before I buy)

If you flash some cash everything's negotiable ;)

I'd so take one of those over a Golf, even if it is previous-gen..

Thats the problem, my loan should be through by Wednesday, would this be an issue? I do have deposit money available, will I still be good on negotiating on price?

You'll rarely ever drive away in a car same day from a dealer anyway, nor pay for it same day, so I wouldnt worry.

OK, the Leon above is no good, overdue a service and no cambelt change etc.

Im going to view the golf tomorrow PM, I need a refresher course on how to get him down on price, I dont have full funds yet until Wednesday but I do have a deposit (£1k)

He has listed it as £5995, my loan is £5500, I have around £200 spare cash but I would like to if possible get him down to £5500 if possible? give me some tips people :) (if you think I could go lower then let me know)

In increments of......

You don't want to just keep going up if he says no.
Go with a figure in mind which you wont pay higher than. Try offering him £1000 off, see what he comes back with, then maybe try and meet in the middle?

Let him know it's a cash sale, that you are interested and that you've seen similar ones in a similar condition for less? You may have seen one with lower milage for a similar figure? You can tell him that and see if he will adjust the price.

Even by just phoning about and making offers, you should be able to get £500 off. I've had some guys call me back saying they'll accept even after they've told me no the first time - if you do that it will give you a better idea on what you're willing to spend.

So offer him £4995, he may say yes no, I say ok well that was really my max budget, im going to have another look at a car on the way back which is in similar condition but its had both water pump and cambelt done (this golf has had cambelt only) and is on 69k, most I could go up to would be £5.3????

No, offer £4500. Mention about the work it will need so to knock price down if needed.
Aim for £5000, though expect to pay a little more.

Can I use my current MK4 to my advantage, as an example that the golf as a pointer that they have issues with the water pump going (and mine has just gone). As this did not get changed with the cambelt..hmmm might need to knock some money off? or does it make me seem abit desperate?

Mate car dealers dont really care about the verbal content its just the bottom line.

If you aint prepared to walk away and leave your number after a low bid, then just come to an amicable price and buy the car.

Yep, just the money that matters. They know the minimum they will take, it's for you to get as close to it as possible.

I shook the hand, couldnt get him down any further than £5550, car overall looks good, drives good, no knocks or rattling , no masses of black smoke out the exhaust. Responds well. Had recent cam change as per service history back in Jan 2010, Its had another service 100 miles ago, MOT until nov 2011 with no minors.

There were one or two small scuff marks and one little ding. But I went for it in the end as apart from these, thats all I could spot that was a negative.

And here is a pic of the marks, is this a biggy or can these be sorted out?

If I had more time to look I really would look and spend a month looking, but iv had a look at a few cars and apart from these small bits the car is in good condition.

I havnt handed over any money yet, going to collect on Wednesday.
