Why no 6980?

Why isn't there a single-gpu direct competitor for the gtx 580 from AMD? I know that AMD is poised to launch their dual-gpu 6990, but so is Nvidia, with their gtx 590.

Which it obviously fails to do, albeit at a fairer price. So this would mean that AMD really have no single-gpu counter for the gtx 580 in terms of performance?

Pretty much!

NV have the £200-400 price brackets wrapped up pretty well.

Is this because AMD failed to make these cards using the 32nm (or 28 can't remember) litography? Could this be the reason why their top of the line single gpu falls so much behind the flagship single gpu solution from Nvidia? I really doubt that when they set out to make the 6970 they wanted it to be so far behind the rival flagship.

Edit: Also I believe that it is because of AMD's inability to counter the gtx 580 that the latter is still so outrageously expensive, because it doesn't have a competitor.

I personally don't care who has the best card in terms of performance.

Like most gamers, I am after a decent card for the price and the 6950 does that very very well.

Yes the 580 is the best card out there but I honestly don't care!

If Nvidia didn't have the performance crown it wouldn't be able to price its gtx 580 so high

They don't have the performance crown anyway, the 5970 still holds that, soon to be the 6990, and they still price their stuff high, out of necessity since they cost so much to manufacture.

Why would you aim a new flagship product at a discontinued previous generation product like the 480?

Both the 500 and 6000 series make no sense compared to the previous cards, seemingly they just put out what they could before the next die shrink.

as a 6970 owner i have to say, i'm happy with my purchase

its a capable card offers excellent value for money which is something i couldnt say about the 580's and to an extent the 570's which at the time i bought my 6970 were a fair bit dearer.

performance per ££ i'm happy of course nvidia have the faster card and take that crown BUT just for talkings sake i'd imagine that for every 580 that is sold in the £350 and beyond price range, theres 10-15 cards sold in the £2-300 range, where amd are really competing with team green.

its simple economics for amd/ati you push your cards where they make you the most money, obviously making money is more important than epeen
