Limited Edition Items ?

have been thinking about this for a while and thought i would put it to you lot.

When we see the title "limited edition" on various items including food to pc items when would you say how limited it is and how many items would you class as limited edition ?

let's say for instance a graphics card has come onto the market and is "limited edition" but there are 100,000 made,would you class that as limited edition or should the number made be lower to class it as limited edition ?

i would say it should be lower as being limited it would mean a higher price tag but sought after.
 
I wouldn’t class anything as limited edition unless it was a thousand or much less. The rest is just a marketing ploy.
 
Yep, generally a marketing ploy. Only have 2 special editions, one being Anno 1404 because I really liked the box and Half Life 2: Raising the Bar book. The latter being a true limited edition, it's now worth substantially more than the original £20 price tag (2 buy it nows on ebay for £110)
 
Marketing ploy indeed but they dont always work as some of the limited edition items they offer are just pure rubbish.
 
I like special edition strategy games... tends to come with maps manuals etc

I didn't get that silly version of Civ however - I do want the models now though :( :p

Yeap it's just a marketing ploy to charge a bit extra sometimes for certain bits and bobs.

Almost all products are 'limited editions' if you think about it..

Doesn't mean though after a while some products will be worth something of course. Toys and other collectables for example.
 
My general view is that if you think the limited edition is worth the money in some way e.g. you really want the extras that are supposed to be unique to it, you prefer the design or it is truly limited edition and you're buying it as an investment then there's no problem with it but many things described as limited editions are, as Greenlizard0 suggests, limited only in the sense that almost everything has a finite limit to the numbers it will be produced in.

That was the first thing I thought of when I saw the thread title. :D

And TBH, the ONLY 'limited edition' thing ever made that was truly worthwhile was the orange Twix.

May it return for another 'limited' run again one day.

Almost everything can be label as limited edition as there is a cycle to every product so eventually production is going to stop.

They can limit it to 10, or 10 million and it is still limited.

And I wouldn't bother unless it is numbered either. so 1/250.
 
'Limited Edition' is a marketing technique used to make customers purchase their product, customer usually think it holds great value and its rare so they purchase it. In 'limited Editions' companies normally add a few extra items just to make it appealing for the customer so they are encouraged to purchase it. <- Basic business ****.
