I've had a pair of Evga cards now for about a month and only just got around to putting a game on my PC this weekend (Metro 2033). I was quite surprised by the amount of heat and noise produced by these two cards compared to my old 285gtx (single).

With the introduction of the 560gtx would I see a reduction in the noise level if I changed them out for a pair of the 560's with custom dual fan coolers? or even a single 580gtx - like the Gainward phantom edition?

The noise level produced by these two cards really is not acceptable.

Are these the blower type cards? Is your case cooling adequate? going from a single card to two in SLI will increase temps and noise a lot if not cooled decently.

Why dont u change the fan profile so they spin faster at low temps and not ramping up to high speeds when temp rises

Msi afterburner is your friend u might even be able to drop the voltage on the cores lowering your temps

I've got a Silverstone FT02 case with the 3 air penetrator fans pushing air directly upwards so I opted to go for a pair of Evga cards which blow the air directly out the back of the cards. I guess this design is more louder than the one's which dump the air inside the case?

my unlocked 6950 is running at 89 degrees under load at 38% and the 4 aftermarket coolers make it sound like there is a storm in the computer!

If there overclocked then put the clocks/voltage back to stock

As overclocked cards will spin the fans up a fair bit faster which will make them louder...
