am i right in saying all sandybridge I5's and I7s are only duel channel?

I am guessing the extra performance of triple channel over duel was pretty negligable then?

cheers

The current i5 and i7 Sandy Bridge are on LGA1155 (H67 & P67 chipsets currently) these are dual channel and replace the LGA1156 (P55 & H55 chipsets) which also were dual channel.

Later this year possibly we will see LGA2011 and the corresponding i5 and i7 Sandy Bridge CPUs (we may potentially only see i7s?). These will use the X68 chipset and will be quad channel which replace the LGA1366 (x58 chipsets) which were triple channel.

I think, not really seen any hard evidence yet of the new offerings.

SandyBridge P67 is the main stream platform.

And has dual channel support.

The extreme or performance platform will be updated towards the end of the year and will support quad channel.

The extra performance of tri channel is vast and very handy in certain applications. Certainly something that is being expanded and improved on with the next generation of performance platforms.

SB is the mainstream offering :)

But yes tri channel is nearly a think of the past.

is it really? i did not know that... mind you, i am sure dual channel will do for me now.

going quad channel makes sense i guess over tri-channel as it means it may be easier to upgrade - ie to jump from dual to quad by buying another cheap matched dual channel pair of sticks.

Perhaps to the end of the year, I wonder of this business with the H/P67 chipsets will delay their launch? I'd have imagined that the tech between the P67 and X68 in regards to the sata controllers may be similar causing them to have to re-do the X68 chipset also?

But then I'm just speculating.

indeed, 8gb does seem somewhat overkill but 6gb may have been ok.

mind you at the prices of the stuff here.........

(although i am sticking with 4gb for now :) )
