Don't like the Sceeee Rock O at all, I know I'm on my own here but don't like them. Don't like the Polo either actually so I'm not really helping here am I. :(
 
Not sure what the interior of the Polo GTI is like, but I had a standard Polo as a loaner for a morning and the inside was horrible.

Unless this is funded by a company car allowance, I don't know why you don't buy a Mk5 Golf GTI DSG. Better all round car than either IMO but with characteristics of both.

Although all VAG lumps are going to be decent, I'd question the reliability of the 1.4 compared to a 2.0. It's going to be pushed harder, and with twin-charging it's a more complicated design. The 2.0T we know is available from the factory with basically the same hardware achieving a safe 270bhp...

I'd honestly rather have the Polo GTI.

If I saw a Polo GTI I'd probably be intrigued and want to have a look at it. A bog standard Scirocco 1.4 TSI (especially a poverty-spec 120bhp one without the essential options) on the other hand would not draw the same interest.

I guess I'd rather have 'the best' of a model as opposed to the cheapest, budget option of a model, which is essentially what we have here.
If you were buying brand new the 1.4 TSI option doesn't make sense for me, unless you were buying it in a situation where insurance carries heavy financial weight or you have some sort of environmental agenda. Furthermore for a buyer without much experience with hot hatches or faster vehicles I've got a feeling the Polo would be immensely fun to drive. The thought of a bloody Polo with more power than a Cooper S makes me chuckle.

but a 2nd hand 2.0 GTI with a remap would the be same price as the 1.4 but even faster still.

Revo will take the 2.0 TFSI engine to 300bhp with a remap.

You can't really bring tuning into it because the same is true of both engines. Both are equally tunable. You say you'll never need that sort of power, but once you get used to it, more power is always exciting (unless you get enjoyment from some other factor like improved handling etc..)

If you were buying the Scirocco hypothetically as a straight-line machine with tuning in mind, would you be better off with the GT over the premium of the R - bearing in mind the R does not have 4WD?
 
i'd definately plump for the GT over the R. Especially if he thinks he'll be content with the 1.4 TSI.

My mate has a brand new Fabia VRS, got it literally last week and has had it on order for months. It doesnt really pull that hard, and as evo says the exhaust note is very plain. The gearbox is superb, and its crying out for a powerful engine to really take use of it.

It's still an impressive engine in its own right, taking into account economy.

A 1.4 TSI is never going to deliver an exciting exhaust note though.
One might buy an R32 for the exhaust note, but a GTI for economy and - virtually - the same performance. (MK5)
 
it was more a comment about the DSG box that the fabia/polo come with.

Its such a speedy box you could feel it changing gears in milliseconds and then begging for you to put more power down, but none comes ! Its shouting at you "C'mon lets do this !, lets go for it ! I'm up for it !" but it jsut never accelerates with any of the shove in the back you associate with a turbocharged car.
