The entire Sun can now be observed for the first time in human history

Just caught wind of this on NASA's site and thought it was a pretty impressive thing in itself, that and the fact that the video felt like I was staring at the info screens while walking through a SciFi movie on board DS8 or through a ship's deck in an FPS game (AvP/Doom etc) :p

Anyway, STEREO (Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory) was launched in 2006 in an effort to see the entire Sun and help spot solar storms brewing on the other side long before they do from Earth.

Interesting video, I didn't know that they could interpolate activity going on on the far side of the sun before.

Very true, as Sagan says in Cosmos if we were to be visited by aliens they would think we are trying to destroy ourselves.

I find this surprising, after looking up the figures the entire Apollo program (from 1961-75) cost a total of 1.3% of the United States GDP (wiki says $170billion in 2005 $s, google says 2005 gdp was $12.6trillion). Yet the US spends 4.6% of its GDP on military spending annually (google). That's three and half Apollo scale programs every year! We would have men on Mars by now if these figures were the other way around.
