iPhone to PC transfer

My wife's iPhone is playing up. I need to reboot/restore it but stupidly she's never sychronised it with iTunes, so she's going to lose all her stuff.

I've searched for software to transfer apps etc from an ipod to a pc and there are dozens.

Can anyone vouch for any of these?

I have a new iTunes set up on a laptop. I know I need to authorise it for her account or something. Anything else I need to do or be aware of? I want to lose as little as possible.

Update.

I've authorised her iPhone with the new laptop and it synchronised all her purchases with iTunes, so nothing iTunes based has been lost.

I've successfully updated the iPhone via iTunes BUT, the screen is still totally blank.

iTunes recognises it and like I say I could update it and transfer/back all her stuff.

Anyone had this happen to an iPhone? Completely black screen, but still being recognised as iPhone on PC?

I've tried a hard reset (two bottons together). Maybe I need to restore the whole thing? Or is it dead somehow?

Is that fairly common?

I've searched on the apple website and all the solutions to a blank screen are just a hard reset which isn't working for us.

Will be taking it to apple this evening.
