As you guys know I am selling my BMW 330ci convertible.

The mrs and I have been looking at an RX-8.

Good and bad points?? What should I be looking out for? Whats the cost of running e.g petrol, tax etc etc.

Cheers

Short version: cheap to buy, relatively expensive to run.

I'm sure someone will be along in a sec with the long version.

Two years ago I went to see a 3yo, 1 owner, full Mazda history example with 60k on the clock (and a 3 month old engine) that SAAB had taken as part ex. That was up for £6k and the guy offered it to me for £5.5k there and then. They were worth it then, now when they are older and as such go wrong more and the prices really aren't that much different I wouldn't bother.

Only from what I've read/heard but...

Positives:
Cheap to buy
Look great
Well balanced handling

Negatives:
Drink problem (fuel and oil)
Needs to rev to get the power out, can make it feel a bit lethargic
Questionable engine reliability / frequency or rebuilds
Generally quite expensive to run (tax, fuel, servicing etc.)

In all honesty I would still have one but not as a daily motor. As a fun car to do a few thousand miles a year in after drudging around in a dull mobile all week, it could still fit the bill.

Seems pointless - it's no quicker than your 330ci but if you get a post March 2006 one they cost £435/year to tax and it will be loads less economical. They use a fair bit of oil too.

Yes a strange change, I can't imagine it's to do with money as the RX-8 isn't cheap to run.

I think the OP is yet another person who makes little to no sense when it comes to car choice and has no idea what he actually wants. Lets look at his previous thread, where he posted:

given the really bad snow up here in the past 2 years and increased running costs the wife and I are thinking of downsizing our BMW 330ci M sport convertable

So, he wants to change his car because of:

a) Really bad snow
b) Increased running costs

Yet now he is asking us for more information on another rear wheel drive car with even higher running costs.

Pointless.

Oh, and it's a 330Ci Sport, not an M Sport.

Im lookng at getting an RX8 as it meets every requirement of mine...

- Want a car that looks nice inside and out
- Faster than my astra
- Only do about 5k miles a year so running costs arnt too bad
- Have about 4k to spend

£4k is surely not going to get you a good one? I remember recently seeing CAT D and high mileage ones for about £5k.

I just looked. It seems there are loads around in the 3.5 to 5k bracket. All 53s and 04s.
To think I paid 22k for one back in 2004. Glad I got rid when it was still worth something.

Check trader theres a fair few around the 3-5k area. All between 60-100k.

They've dropped massively in value over the last few years.

Hmmm, I remember checking PH about 6 months ago and not seeing a decent one for sub £5k, must have dropped even more. Scary to think you can pick them up for £3.5k now then!
