Hey everyone,

I think this is probably the best place for this thread. Basically I'm looking at buying a nice flat, I've had an offer accepted for a decent price. Its a nice modern 2 bed place with modern kitchen and bathrooms. The only problem with it is the internet! It is right on the edge of the town and as such it only has ADSL with around 2mbit connection. I'm currently living in the centre of the town with a 50bmit Virgin connection! Sad though it may seem the poor connection is actually giving me pause for thought.

Going down from 50 to 2 mbit really isn't a nice thought, I spend a lot of time of the internet and download a lot. I have a feel I'm nit picking here since otherwise the flat is lovely. I just wanted to get everyone opinions on living with or without fast internet. Anyone who has experience of going from a fast connection to a slow one it would also be great to hear what the experience was like!

Am I just being stupid?? It is possible (well probably likely) that BT will be installing the new FTTC service around the middle of the year so this whole problem may then go away. But for now its a concern....

Like you said, BT will be installing fibre to cabinet so you'll be only at least a 20Mbps connection mid year. Go for the nicer flat.

You'll get faster internet at some point in time and 2MB is liveable with but you’ll just have to drink a lot of tea waiting. I wouldn’t let it stop me from buying a nice place.

Well the FTTC isn't guaranteed. Not all cabinets are suitable for it and at the moment on the BT website for the new flat it states that there are currently no plans for it to be installed!

there will be a nice place with virgin, i know i personally wouldnt accomodate anywhere that didnt have virgin when i was looking for a place and i was only renting!

Couldn't really be happier with where I am AND I don't have to wait days for things to download, using 8mb at work is bloomin frustrating coming from 50mb at home.

If you'd said 50 down to adsl2 ie 16/24mb then yea ok, not a biggy, but down to 2? I get more than that when tethered with my mobile

Unless you require the high speed internet connection in order to earn money, getting hung up on it is silly.

Flat > Internet.

Is that 2mbps even with ADSL2+ or MAX?

Where did you check the connection speed? Did you check on phone number or pot code?

If you haven't already have a look on Samknows.

Probably preaching to the converted but it's worth making sure you've chekced every angle.

2Mb is fine.

512kb or 256kb and that would be enough to start me thinking about elsewhere.

Bah people complain too much I have lived with 2mb for about 3 years and before that only 512K.

We were going to get 20Mb on 14th Novemeber but BT changed their plans and we will not be upgraded until around 2016 at the earliest now :(

2mb is fine, go for the nicer flat.

I went from 50mb to 1mb

It does suck, but things like youtube and streaming programs still work, gaming pings are still fine. Just downloads take a lot longer.

Not the end of the world tbh

2MB is fine for gaming/web browsing etc.

It's not going to be forever as you say there are plans to upgrade it?

If you like the flat get it or you will be kicking yourself

2MB is still plenty fast for just about everything.... Only difference is some things will take longer to download. But if you download overnight what difference does it make if it takes 30 mins or 4 hours ?

You can still benefit from all the techniques to conserve bandwidth such as:

caching proxy server
adblocking / hosts file blocking
use scheduling software to download 'big' files overnight e.g. torrents / etc. (or during the day if you are out working) Check with your ISP when throttling occurs so you can maximise through put.

If you use your connection fully you can download 20GB a day / 600 GB a month that should be enough, no?

If you 'need' more then go for hosted services such as :
webhosting for files rather than hosting them yourself
seedboxes for torrenting

Or get to know a friend with a good conenction other side of town and setup and account / server in his location.

We are going from 25meg to 0 this weekend...

I am hoping to get net connection the following week or at the end of the month. Want me to do a write up based upon deprivation of nets?

I think I will struggle lol.
