After some advice on how to proceed.

Someone drove into my girlfriends car, she was in the second lane of a two lane road, 30mph, someone came out of a side road, joined the first lane, then tried to join the second lane didn't look and drove into the front side of her car.

The driver (young male) gave her the finger and drove off.

The police came, took details, took statement from witness who stopped, another witness gave her the complete reg as she had most of it. The car shows as insured on ask MID.

We don't have the witness details, but the police do.

She phoned her insurance company who obviously want to use their repairer, however I would prefer to take the car to the main dealer as it is only 18 months old. Worried about quality of work, future issues with any corrosion or other problems.

The car requires new front wing and new front alloy (scuffed all over from 3rd parties car). Fortunatly the front bumper and bonnet seem OK and the door is fine.

Now what is the best avenue to follow, there is the possibility that the car was stolen (unlikely given the car), I suspect it could be a parents/relatives car that has been TWOC.

Can we phone the insurance back and tell them that we want to use the main dealer rather than their garage, how will this work?

If anyone owns a clamping company or similar who could find details from the DVLA that would be helpful..... ;)

Can't see why they wouldn't accept going through a main dealer, as the cost will come from the other drivers insurance (assuming the driver is the insured person)

No admital of fault or anything yet.

You would assume that the police can simply look the details up, go round and "have a word" then contact us with their details.

That would be too easy though and unfortunately I can't see it happening.

If the police manage to get hold of the owner/driver then they will surely be guilty of leaving the scene of a crime and there'd be no contest with regards to fault?

See above.

Have you phoned Helphire? Tell them the situation and see what they say, if they will take the case on they will use whoever you choose for repairs and just take the £12 "insurance" out incase something goes wrong with recovering the costs from the third party. Safest and easiest way of sorting out a non-fault accident tbh.

It's a hit and run, so it is a criminal (police) matter, rather than a civil dispute bumper scrape.

Speak to the police and they should at least tell you if the insured was driving of if it was stolen etc.

Take it from there.

Where was this matey? The little **** house. I bet he was about 17?

The A49 past the Ford garage in Wigan. 2 lanes and goes into 3 lanes following the lights.

I was at work at the time, otherwise I probably would have chased him up the street, or we would have taken my car and it wouldn't have happened.
