MPV - Zafira VXR - opinions?

Get a Cayenne on finance, preferably a turbo, you wont regret it :)

Well, been to look at one and test drove it. Opinions, I live the seats, really supportive, fast as you'd expect, but one thing I found strange, and I don't know if it's normal, when you accelerate, foot lightly on the pedal, you pick up at a decent pace, then if you put your foot down, it seems like it's in neutral, I.e the revs go right up, but with no pick up of speed. Does that make sense? Also, the one I looked at was a 07 plate red one, and it's already started suffering with vauxhalls 'pinking' on the body panels. Overall, I liked it more than I expected and I would probably buy one. But not that one I looked at. I'm going to test an S max tomorrow.

Sounds like the clutch was knackered on the one you drove, how many miles were on it?

Out of interest, do they have a usable boot when all the seats are in use? That's what I love about my Estima (Previa), nice big usable boot even with all 7 seats in use. Just getting a few ideas for when it's time to change.

A little but not much as the Previa, which is basically a full size MPV.

Knackered clutch???

I don't think s max's are much better my neighbour is always borrowing my jump leads as it refuses to start in the cold

It always confuses me when people post stuff like this. His particular car clearly has a fault, why doesnt he get it fixed rather than always borrowing your jump leads? No modern car should ever have a problem starting when its cold, it just doesn't happen anymore.

I suspect his battery is near the end of its life.

I assume it was a manual (do they even do an auto VXR?!) if so then it has to be the clutch.

To be honest for carting kids around I wouldn't bother trying to be "daddy cool" in a quick variant. You can't drive it like a performance car with the kids in it anyway and you are compromising its main function which is to transport the family around in comfort.

Good call, but out of budget :(

The XC90 I linked to was diesel with <100k miles and full service history and was on at less than £9.5k. There are others that are cheaper and with less miles but at a lower spec (still higher than a Zafira).

Not trying to be funny, but what about it didn't you like because either your budget is actually quite a bit less than £9k and £9k would be a real stretch or there's something else bothering you about the XC90.

Clutches are common issues with the VXR's they tend to be abused and the standard clutches are really not up to the type of driving a VXR usually gets. I have a C-maxx Grand and fitted 4 kids 2 adults and the mutt in suprising comfort. For your budget I would deffinately have a look at the S-maxx.

Age and mileage were a problem with anything in my area, they get a bit newer with lower mileage after about 10k. This car will have to last a few years so i don't want anything with nearly 100k miles on it, especially when i drive over 15k miles a year . My mondeo has 104k on it and it feels like it! therefore i'll be looking for around 50k miles on whatever i buy. 9k is the top of my budget and i'm sticking with that, otherwise, where will it stop, 9.5 / 10k? Hell, why not 10.5k? it's only 1.5k over. I am not making the mistake of buying something i cannot comfortably afford.

There are a few S-Max's in budget but these are the lower end again, sluggish 1.8 engines and LX spec with the odd zetec. I don't want a car where i'm not going to feel comfortable trying to overtake a car doing 50 in an NSL, therefore i need a bit of power, hence me looking at the VXR. It's in budget, looks good, has power, fair enough, interior isn't the best quality, but the seats are great, hey, when you're limited to 7 seaters, unless you've got 15k plus, you can't get what you want!

If you like the Zafira you can get a decent 07/08 plate 1.9 Sri CDTi with low miles and warranty for 9k or a 1.8 vvti Sri 140bhp comes in at less than 9k..
