A3 or Golf (2001)

Don't forget the waterpump, electrics (immobaliser, drivers door control module, central locking) strut, bushes,

Also worth looking to see if your window clips in the door are plastic or metal. If plastic they are known for going and thats around an 80-100 pound fix. My Golf drivers side windows dropped one evening, most bloody annoying I can tell you. Luckily it had just come out of the clips and I already had metal ones so was a £35 fix.

As for the person asking about where to find good golf I found my one on Autotrader. It is an automatic but its a 2001 Golf, 56k miles, SE so has heated seats, parking sensors etc. Perfect interior, 2 small stone chips on the bonnet and a broken outer wing mirror casing for £3300 so was very happy with that. They are out there but I did look at some horrendous ones as well.

And there we go, you think 550 quid is cheap for a clutch?

Cost me around £900 for an OEM clutch and Dual Mass flywheel fitted at a local vw independant, granted i have a more akward engine configuration than the Golf but still its around a £700 job, then we have the turbo which won't have much more in it, cam tensioner, wideband, most of the pcv system will be shot by now and it will need the oil pickup doing.

So that's a couple of grand from the start.

with the cold weather we had in december, the windows in mine were freezing into the frame. this causes an issue one night, 65 miles into a 125 mile trip (and 125 mile return journey also)

window froze into the frame, passenger attempted to wind down said window but didnt wind it up properly afterward.

window then dropped into the door, at about 11pm on the m25 and it was -7* outside

with only basic tools i had the door apart and fixed it. a 65 mile drive back in -7* would have probably killed us, but the simplicity of golfs mean stuff like that can be pulled apart with only basic tools

Yeah if you know what your doing its fine, although there are those special hex or whatever screws to get off so would need a tool for that as I don't have it. Mine too was because it was cold and had frozen shut and I stupidly hammered the electric button . And it was just after work this happened and I also live in a crap neighbourhood so was very concerened it would get broken into!!

So I didn't have the time during the week as it would have been in the dark I would have to do it and it was ****ing cold lol so didn't fancy doing it at all. So took it over the road to the guy there who new his stuff (thank god for forums!!) And he did it in the comfort of his heated shop lol. But now I know whats involved and its warmer I'm gonna take off the passenger door and double check it has metal clips so it won't happen on that side.

It is ******* annoying, oh and I also had the water pump go after 1 days ownership :mad: Was thinking I had got a lemon at that stage but it was just Golfs stupid use of plastic impellers  So luckily my dad is a mechanic so for £150 for parts I got that and the cambelt done. Other than those 2 things its been fine, touch wood.

A lot of the vag group use plastic impellors. i think the logic being that if it freezes the impellor shears rather than killing the timing belt.

the door did involve stupid star shaped fasteners... the bottle open on my multi tool was just the right size for it :D

i was so angry that i couldnt speak. 70-80mph on the m25, minding my own business, and suddenly the car is ice cold inside.

she obviously has no idea how to fix it, in fact when the car got broken into one night (in london) the 45 mile drive back without a window nearly killed us and it was +7* that night. to make it more annoying, the windows had been freezing all week so she should have known what ot expect

obv, after fixing it, with all the wrong tools, at the side of the road in the snow whilst it was -7* i actually felt pretty good about myself

I went from a 1999 golf 1.8t 150bhp to a 2001 golf v5 170bhp and my insurance dropped from £850 a year to £670 strangely enough the v5 seemed like a much quicker car.

Yea that's pretty impressive, I probably would have just strapped a plastic bag to it or something and dealt with it when it got slightly warmer :D

In its standard form, the V5 has a lot more torque and a flatter curve which could possibly attribute to it feeling faster, but in reality there isn't much in it.

just oem clutch and flywheel is around £1k for parts along, sachs uprated one is pretty much the same money. joys of the 6spd

Im currently looking for a similar car but around the £3500 - £4000 mark. I think im looking in the wrong place however as i cannot find any decent 1.8t Golf's/Bora's for the money you guys are discussing.

Any pointers?

youll stuggle to find a 1.8t bora at the best of times and at a premuim.
much better looking than the golf imo

tooo many people not looking after the engine, hammering it everywhere then switching off before the oil has had a change to cool, therefore burning oil onto everything.
ether that of wrong spec oil used.
or people going with long life servicing right through its life 20k oil changes are not recommended, especially on a turbo where the oil gets slightly warmer

if i could go back i would pick an A3 and go for the quattro. if your playing with the engine your suddenly going to have a decent amount of power through the front wheels. going for the a3 you get fake quattro in the form of a haldex clutch, so its front wheel drive most of the time until wheels slip haldex engages and becomes 4wd.
here is a slight excess in weight but its that or having to look towards LSDs

I knew I shouldn't have listened to Matt, you'd think I'd have learnt my lesson after his previous posts :(

Fingers crossed it won't cost you a fortune in repairs.
The £000s I spent on my Leon was just ridiculous.

It'll end up costing at some point, they all have the same issues and they can happen at any time.

It's all fun and games lol, guess my biggest expenses were clutch and flywheel, and of course cambelt, waterpump... otherwise the jobs/common stuff aint tooooo expensive, but it's just the niggles which let the car down, most mentioned above with window regulators, door modules and stuff :) Mines had a lot of stuff done... maintenance wise now all thats left are wishbone bushes, ball joints, track rod ends, top mounts, maybe a PAS fluid flush and change... but thats it I think, literally everything else has been changed! lol
