Well insurance renewal time has come, and due to getting older/having a years no claims I can now afford something slightly bigger :)

Currently have a 1.6l Seat Cordoba, 2001.
It's a great car, not a lot of poke but it does the job, big enough at the moment for what I need, but I can see that changing.

Planning a couple of holidays this summer where a bigger car would be massively appreciated, Font with my climbing club (so lots of gear needed), elsewhere is France with my Mum/girlfriend (Mum only has a Focus so a bigger car would be nice), Cornwall with girlfriend.
Insurance price difference between the two is only £50 this year, whereas it was upwards of £500 last year. Hence me being able to afford it now insurancewise!

Got whatever I can get for my Cordoba really, maybe an extra £100 or two, so around £1000-1100.

Anything to look out for? Things that go wrong? Things to stay away from?
Best trim levels?

Am I right when I think going for a 2001 (MK2?) would be the best option?

All the normal things to look for on any car really, rust is the biggest issue ime. Rusts at the arches, particularly the rear and sills and perhaps boot, ohh and the alloys will almost definitely be corroded. Make sure all the electrics work.

Your budget is plenty for a mk2 so I wouldn't worry there, I paid £500 for one 2 years ago locally off ebay to last me a year in university.

Trim level wise get zetec/ghia and either the 2.0 or the 2.5v6.

Can only afford the 1.8 on insurance really, 2.0 is a £200 leap again... And then more petrol too.

I can deal with lack of power, I have 75hp at the moment!

the 1.8 is fine (it's what I have) and is apparently the pick of the engines for economy/power ratio. Check the rear arches, passenger footwell (for water) and the boot for water (can come in through the rear lights).

Good solid car :)
