Are any of the Total War series any good for 5 people to play?

Can you play 2vs3 or even better 5vsAI?

I notice Total War: Rome (Gold Edition) is nice and cheap!

They all are! Just remember to agree some sort of rules to keep the game balanced.

Also, the max players is 8 I believe. And remember also, on rome at least, identical factions must be on the same side.

In any battle with more than 3-4 players I start to turn down the graphics slightly (grass, shadows, reflections - that sort of thing) to keep the game running nice and smooth...

I imagine a 5 player free for all in that with full armies would be amusing. Doing 2v3 sieges (with the 2 defending) would probably be decent to.

So we could have 5vsAI battles?

Multiplayer Shogun was amazing... Empire would blow my mind!

So, assuming all five of us are going to get a "Total War", which should we get, assuming we'd also like a cheap option ideally!?

As I said before, Total War: Rome (gold edition) is only about £5...?

Rome total war is the way forward, favourite of the series for me.

I loved shogun too but that's a bit older. Shogun two is out march though if you can wait but will be mega-bucks for 5 people, unless steam do a 4-pack.

OK! Thanks!

Rome (Gold edition) is £5, and the Medieval II (Complete Pack) is only £9.99...

So can anyone advise which is the better multiplayer game of the two?

Rome and M2 are about equal for me in online play.
If you're going to play the single player aswell (even if not as much) then Rome tips the scale in my oppinion (the barbarian expansion game is fantastic multiplayer aswell, and Alexander adds a different element to the single player)

If you're one of those graphics obsessives then you'll want M2.

It also depends on your play style. If you fancy guns and tactics go for Empire/Napoleon. If you're more atmosphere and quick play (most of the time) then go Rome/M2.

I like them all, so I have them all lol. I could never choose between them all - I play them equally even today!

Sorry, should have said...

Rome is excellent, but if you're going back to it from a newer edition in the series (as I did from Empire) you'll find it a bit spartan. If you can get if for a fiver a copy it's definitely worth a blast.

rome or medieval 2, but i imagine even with rome being an old game, 5+ armies will need a powerful rig, and medieval 2 would need an absolute beast.

Are you suggesting my machine would not let us play 5vsAI or 3vs2 games (quad core 3ghz)?

Rome it would be fine, im not sure on medieval 2 though, i think my dual core got choppy with any more than 3 armies, quad will probably handle it a lot better though :)

If you've played both, Rome and ME2, is their multiplayer much the same? Because that's what we're most interested in. Or is ME2 superior in ways?

They're pretty much identicle, other than the change in play style created by the time period.
Personally I find Rome more tactical and M2 more 'Charrggee!' But that's just my oppinion - they both play pretty much the same.

With the Barbarian Invasion included in the Rome gold edition Rome can even play night battles just as M2 can.

Just decide which time period you like better. And whether you care about slightly more polished graphics (which won't matter in such large battles anyway as you'll probably have to turn a couple bits down).

In reply to some of the other topics in the thread: Playing large battles like that and it becoming slow could be more to do with internet connection as much as processor speed aswell...

M2TW I'd say as rome will feel a little too dated without mods I think. But then I prefer Napoleon now as I feel it is a lot more developed. Bring on Shogun 2!

Charrggee!... Oh ****, he's packing Arbalesters/Longbows and Pikes. Where's my army go? :p

TBH I did love Rome for tactics. It's the contrast of styles, the Greek nations are all heavily reliant on Phalanxes, while Rome and Carthage depend on disciplined military. Then you have the barbarian nations, who thrive through sheer weight of numbers/blood lust. My favourate nation was Thrace for it's ridiculous mix of Phalanx and Barbarian units. Bastarnae could wreak havok on an enemy army if used as suicide troops, with your archers and Peltasts safely behind a wall of Phalanx.

Medieval 2 has the more interesting campaign, but certainly by the late period all the armies are very similar. The military differences between nations decrease as time goes on.

Rome does feel dated these days though.
