I got this email from my ISP saying that I've download a file from a torrent. And that they have received a "take down" notification from "an organisation or individual" which holds the copyright to that file.

What the hell is this? And is this even legal?

Are your sure it's a legitimate email? Do you use torrents etc? Who is your ISP? If you google part of the email you might find others that have had the same and then you can read what happened to them or what they did about it.

Good luck :)
(I wouldn't worry tbh)

'You' and I say you, because it will be addressed to you as your name is on the account as it were, but anyway, 'you' have downloaded software - a game / or movie or whatnots, which a company has seen via your IP address, and notified your ISP. that ISP is then warning you not to be noughty as it were.
Is it legal? depends who you ask. - but if it wasnt directly you, someone who you live with perhaps? or if not that, maybe an unsecure network?

The email is fine, they have my public IP address they have stated the file that was download and they know what client was used to download this. It is sent from my ISP for sure

Someone may have downloaded something that they shouldn't have. How do they know all this?

everything you do on the net is tracable, everything, watching pron, they know, downloading this weeks top ten, they know.

If you don't download / upload torrents, or this was never your IP address (or wasn't at the time they allege but subsequently is) then I would go back to your ISP and kick off.

You will know if you have downloaded this file at the time in question - if you did, simply take the warning and don't do it again.

The brief version goes something like:
- When you (or someone using your internet connection) downloads a file using torrents you are also normally sharing the parts of the file you have with others.
- A copyright owner (often using a specialist company) can search for their own material, and can see your IP as one sharing the file.
- The IP address tells them which ISP to approach, and they can ask the ISP to send emails etc. to be sent to whoever's account had that IP at the time.
- The 'takedown' will mean to stop sharing the file(s)

IIUC, there is a difference legally between downloading (which is a civil copyright infringement issue) and uploading (which could be viewed as a criminal offence of distributing copyright material). With p2p you're effectively doing both at the same time.

So what did you download? Better have been worth the jail time you're soon due.

Just delete all your downloads/uploads or any other files that maybe shared. Had the same thing myself....

Long as your not sharing the file and uploading it to others its ok....

Look into uttorent ip filter, its a special filter used to block nosey companies including bbc and others from snooping on your habits, been around for many years and worth keeping it up to date and using it also.

And it does absolutely nothing to stop them tracing you.
