Do the DVLA ever send the Police out to check?

Had a rather ominous experience with a Police car outside my house today. Now, I live in a quiet close where little happens and he was parked directly outside my house, spending a lot of time looking in this direction.

I've not been a naughty boy, and have nothing to worry about but I have been a bit of an idiot in forgetting to register the Mondeo SORN since the tax ran out (It's not been used since before the tax expired - 1/1/11). When making the SORN declaration online early today, the website mentioned the discrepancy between the tax expiring and it being registered SORN, mentioned that it would be passed on to their investigations team and said that they may be in contact with me.

Is it likely they asked the Police to go and check that it was parked off-road at my address? I have nothing to worry about really, but it has left me with a case of curiosity.

If its not sorn is that not an offence? i thought if it wasn't taxed then it had to be declared sorn?

Yes, I'm well aware of that.

Why not go and ask them if there is a problem.

By the way they were looking at my house, it looked like they were checking the address - I was waiting for them to get out and come to my door, but instead they drove off.

You been driving off without paying for petrol again aint you :D

That would be one month and ten days.

They regularly take four cars, a "meat wagon" and four bikes for an entire day to assist them in their roadside tax checks, so why wouldn't they ask the police to make a quick stop to do a visual check for a car?

Those however are specific operations in areas that will have hundreds (thousands?) of vehicles passing by the spot they are working on every hour, and very efficient at catching both untaxed/insured vehicles, and general criminals.

I doubt very much the DVLA would use the police to check out an individual, as that would be very expensive, they'd be more likely to use someone on contract directly to themselves, rather than pay for the police time.

You posted the tax disc reminder SORN thing to them however when you didn't hear back from them after over a month you phoned them up and [name] told you it wasn't on the system so you then re-did it on-line, simples

I doubt very much whether the police would be interested with but don’t be surprised if you get a dawn raid. ;)

Contradictory post is contradictory.

i lol'd as i was reading it.

im sure its not a criminal matter at this stage, though. at worst youll get a letter when you do come to re-tax it, from the dvla, moaning about why it was not sorn'd and telling you about a fine etc.

happened to me once but they never did follow it up with the fine once id retaxed it. i had failed to sorn it for 3 weeks whilst the car was in bits getting bodywork done

The police wouldn't really bother with anything like that. The DVLA have their own teams that can and would do that. I've seen their ANPR-equipped Transit van in the residential car park where I live a few times.
