This may well flop flat on its backside, but if anyone's interested I think it may be really helpful given the current economic reality to at least try and give it a go.

Here's the premise:

Nepotism is a big problem in this country - namely, for those who don't have the contacts for themselves - and as such is hindering the social-mobility, happiness and progress for many. For others, they found employment before the downturn, whilst others may have been blessed with either good fortune or the right contacts already.

OcUK's forums are a fairly active, friendly and big place with many regulars who are still struggling, so why not help each other out?

If anyone's got anything they need help with job wise, perhaps breaking into an specific or niche industry, or just trying to get their foot in the door somewhere, please feel free to post here and give details of where you need help. If those of us who are blessed with the contacts or experience to provide that help, experience or knowledge, why not lend a helping hand to our fellow forumites?

Feel free to tell me this is a stupid idea if you want.

Think iI'd be shut down sharpish to stop people turning a profit commercially on the forums back, nice idea mind.

If people try to do that, I think it completely goes counter to the spirit of the thread. Thanks for at least seeing where I'm going with it.

Yeah so I'm looking to get back into work, OcUK advised me that my career choice of local PC Repair and local Publican were no go areas.

Any other idea? :p

To be fair, I wouldn't imagine the market for PC Repair, etc. is too favourable at the moment.

Aside, I appreciate it's in jest but the idea of the thread is more about building favourable contacts to break into certain areas rather than having others try and pick you potential career paths.

How does it work? Because I'm trying run a small online store and would love to know how to increase exposure, as well as various other things, like website functionality and so on.

I have no idea as of yet. I'm just the visionary. :p

Basically I figured people could post in here what they would like help with and hopefully some lurker or passer-by will be able to help somehow, be it through wisdom or by using their own contacts on behalf of the poster.

Does seem like a good idea actually. I'm seriously considering going into teaching and taking the Graduate Teacher Program route, anyone else done it on here?

Doesn't this happen already? In various threads I've seen contacts passed on, people being added to msn to discuss things for those learning/finding out about something or people mentioning there are jobs going at their place of work (when people are looking to get into that area).

Surely it's much too broad to be contained in a single thread, but maybe a more structured way of doing it, so that people can do it within the letter of the rules and as such not be afraid of doing it.

I haven't personally though the Fiancee is a teacher and her brother did a PGCE so i can ask.

There already are a few threads about careers in general. For example I'm sure there's a 'joining the police force' one created by a mod himself.

Perhaps a subforum could be a good idea instead.

It needs definition though, I would presume offering jobs is ok, but by the rules looking for freelance stuff is not.

I think maybe if there were a sub-forum it could be no new topics (by normal users) and have a topic for each type of work, essentially keeps it all together as a reference thing. And if you're a giver then you could subscribe to the thread(s) you know about/are in a position to offer help/advice

This is a great idea. I wouldn't mind doing some free writing for people on OcUK anyway, and it'd be great to build up followers on things like Twitter.

PC repairs no good? I make more than the UK average (full time) salery doing it part time.....

Really?? To meet the UK avage full time salary doing PC Repair, I doubt it would be something you could class as "part time"

Dont get me wrong I do this stuff on the site too, but sometimes PC Repair is a **** of a job as it tends to suck many hours out of you from time to time, and if your saying you pull in enough to meet UK full time salary, you surely must be doing more than 16 hours, which is the "part time" average hours.

average salary is around 21k, 16 hours a week at £25/hr nets you 21k, and you could charge more, and chargeable hours != time actually spent.
