Mubarak not stepping down till September

Surely him stepping down in September is the best way anyway? You don't want a power vacuum.

It would, but it seems his people don't trust him to do the right thing then, he's just trying to keep hold of power in their eyes. They think he'll do the same in September when 'they aren't quite ready yet'.

Mubarak needs to step down now. He wants to leave on his own terms, but I fear there is a very real risk of him ending up in the same situation as Ceaucescu.

Aye, its the military taking it in the neck not Mubarak in his palace or mansion, the army cant be bothered fighting anymore against their people.

They're generally not perceived in that way - they've got a lot of respect from the general population in contrast to the police who are seen as oppressive and pro the current regime.

The general public know nothing about running a country.

Oh I agree! they dont, But they wont stop till he steps down.

Which means he needs to, best thing for the country after all is no rioting. Political windfall can be sorted over time, Riots, not so great if they carry on for too long.

Well we've hardly got a stable situation with him in power at the moment - it would likely bring much more order to the situation if the military were to take over temporarily with the intent to make serious changes - ending the state of emergency bringing in democracy.

He needs to go before it gets violent. The people are fearing even though he claims he wont run that he will wait till September and pull what he did the last time. He won in a landslide victory it was shockingly rigged. The problem is who is going to replace him. They want a proper free election. It could end up worse with the crazy brotherhood in charge.

I think governments and the system runs too slow, if a majority of people want something then governments should do exactly as they say, though i suspect the slow rate of change is no accident, its a way of hindering or even stopping real progress, the internet has shown how with increased communication and interconnectedness things can change quickly if people want, so its about time everyone had true democracy, people shouldn't vote for leaders they should vote on issues and really change things, everything can be improved and optimized if only people were given the chance.

Bring it on, not enough Tanks on the news these days....

lol there are 20 tanks outside the buildings.

also the army said that their with the people 100%. It will be interesting to see the riots tomorrow. According to Aljazeera there are 300+ protesters heading to the state TV building a bit more for the presidential palace.

The deep level of understanding of both politics in general and the Middle East on OcUK never fails to amaze me.

I fear this is going to start getting violent. What is Mubarak up to? What difference does 6 months make? He's had 30 years, the game's up now imo.

Seems like one big power game... if he announces when he will step down, then he's still in a position of control.

Afraid even if Mubarak goes, the Egyptians will just get more of the same corrupt, oppressive government.

The continent of Africa has huge riches in oil and minerals, yet all this wealth flows in to the Swiss bank accounts of whoever rigs the election. Botswana is the only properly run country in Africa.

What is really sad, in this day and age, all that Mubarak would have to do to regain not only popularity in Egypt but across the whole Globe is post a video of himself dancing the Sand Dance in front of thousands of angry protesters to the Bangles' 'Walk like an Egyptian' and upload it to YouTube. Instant legend. Everybody likes.

It really is such a sad, sad World we live in.

emergency embezzlement?

or he's hoping that enough people will be placated for the time being and in 6 months time they will be unable to generate the support again.

Rubbish, I presume you think the poll tax riots where for the lulz, never ever underestimate the people of a country, look at the student riots, how the **** did the MET let students over run them, people bang on about politics, so what, they are not the ones on the front line, it means nothing when people have had enough, read about the Peasants' Revolt.

Mubarak days are numbered

It will be all ****ed if the brotherhood get in =/

Im not saying he should stay though
