Upgrading from an ATI 3870 - recommendations wanted

Hey guys,

I'm a bit short on cash at the moment so I was wondering if an ATI 5670 would be a nice little upgrade over my current 3870 for £60? Or do you have any other recommendations?

Would a CPU upgrade from an E2200 @ 3.1Ghz to a Q6600 be preferable?

I'm looking to get a little extra FPS boost and for some reason Quake Live has very low fps with my setup :(

Any advice would be much appreciated.

The 5670 should give you a good boost for that price. You won't notice any difference in quakelive going to Q6600. I doubt you are playing top end games on a 3870 so I'd just go for the graphics card upgrade for now if you're short on cash.

I can still play all the latest games in mid to high detail at 1600x1200 smoothly with my 3870, but I have a nice 6950 2gb coming tomorrow, so will be able to run games at high to max detail at 1920x1200;)

Overclock the cpu, for online games that is going to be the greater factor, though gpu is still important. As for the 5670, yeah it'll give a reasonable boost though the next model up, the 5750 (just as an example) will be substantially better and isn't that much out of your budget.

If you don't game at a high res then this might be worth considering :

I haven't looked up an nVidia equivalent but a second hand 8800gtx might be worth thinking about. That would still be faster than the 3870, and very cheap, too.

Guy's I don't think a 5670 would be much of an upgrade. It has 400 SP vs 320 of the 3870. 128 bit memory bus w/GDDR5 vs 256 bit memory bus w/GDDR4 of the 3870. I would think it would not be worth the time or money.

Now 4850, 4870, 5750 or 5770 your onto something.

Good find, I'm surprised to see someone still benching with the 3870...lol

Kind of depends on the game, but in some of the games the 5670 is doing better than I thought against the 3870.

EDIT: Fixed ^

upgrading from a 3870 to a 5670 doesnt seem worth it save up some more money and upgrade to something a little impressive, but if you have to upgrade now get a 5750, though a bit more expensive certainly good value for money.

Get a 2nd hand 4890, can be had for the money you are talking about and a vast improvement over the 3870. 3870 was my previous card.
