headphones for movies/gaming

at all that have ns1000 and DR150 which one is more comfortable?

I'd say NS1000s. They look superficially smaller but I find they clamp less. The earcups are smaller though and I found my ears felt funny after wearing them at first. I've got used to it now though (or maybe they loosened up) and they feel very comfortable.

I don't think it's so much a problem with the settings I am using with my Xonar either, as I mostly stick to 2 channel and headphone/speakers in the Xonar control panel - using Dolby Headphone just makes them sound much worse, in everything.:(

Er, i'm no pr0.... BUT im shocked no one else has picked up on this......

When setting dolby headphone up you should use the following settings for games:

XP set windows to 5.1/7.1
set Xonar CP to headphone
tick dolby headphone DH2 sounds best to me

win 7
windows set to 5.1/7.1
set xonar CP to 6/8 channels
tick Dolby headphone with ur preferred DH1-2-3.

EDIT:- I also use the prologic IIx (ticked)

That will / should sound better. I have the same setup with dr50 & my mate opposite has same setup but DR150. directional set up like the above (me on XP & him on win7) sounds pretty darn good to me.

he has only just got his dr150 so they need run in time but on opening the dr50's dont have as 'heavy' mid range or bass.

maybe just me.

personally i LOVE them both. I'd try settings.

thoughts?

EDIT #2 :- I also use the DR50's with the e5 headphone amp and prefer the sound that is produced from them. I would say in my laymens persective it improves them by a good 10-20%. More rich and responsive, makes them seem 'brighter'.

OP might not like Dolby Headphone at all though. Some people can't stand all this surround sound jiggery pokery stuff, and prefer plain stereo. It's not for everyone. It is hard to imagine why someone would not like it, but we all hear differently, so that will play a part in whether we find something to our liking, or not.

I'd assumed that he meant he was running the Xonar in 2 channel mode, having tried Dolby Headphone and not liked it but definitely worth checking if the OP ever had it set up correctly in the first place.

Ur prob right but i didn't see the harm in checking :)

Its also worth making sure he doesnt have any 'funky' EQ settings or GX modes etc on. all round buttons should not be green highlighted and the above settings tend to work best.

Im not saying you will suddenly head everything but the majority find that great!

also another obvious one is the latest drivers or the made ones from the 3rd party (cant remember).

I'm surprised you find the DR150's lacking. They're amazing for me used with my X-Fi card which is connected to an old midi system for amplification, especially compared with my old 5.1 headphones.

I did have to extensively tweak the X-Fi graphic equaliser to get the audio sounding like I want - for some reason game mode has a different dynamic range than the entertainment mode, but the sound quality is excellent, with really clear sound and a bass level you can really feel.

My only issue with them is the stereo separation could be wider, which leads to a somewhat narrow surround sound experience.

I have tried those settings - that's how I set up dolby headphone but I have also used them in 2 channel mode as well. I do not like how the clarity of the audio becomes more muddy in this mode. Yes, the added surround effects are nice, but for example dialogue in movies sounds quite flat and burried within the other sounds, which I dislike.

I suppose one reason you find it ideal, might be because you are using an amp and I am not.

Correct.

Although I am all for trying surround effects, since I like to be lost in the music/movie/game just like any other person, but what takes me away from enjoying that properly is the reduction in dialogue quality or other details. I feel like Dolby Headphone brings out more of the other sounds over the main ones and I find it too distracting.

Again amplification, I don't have any, maybe that's why you and others are finding them fine for everything and I am not, as I don't have any amplification at all for my DR150's.

All I know is, my old Icemat Siberias could be plugged in and do a lot more than my DR150's out of the box. If an amp will bring a whole new level that I haven't experienced, then maybe that's what I should consider, but the price is what puts me off most of them.

TBH, I'm not sure amplification would make enough of a difference really. As I said in a previous post, it's subtle, and not a night and day difference. If they are not to your liking for gaming, without amplification, I can't see an amplifier changing that.

Actually, I beg to differ on this. My mate came over last night with his dr150 (which are only 2 weeks old now and not even run in properly) and listening to MTV on sky from my TV headphone out via the e5 headphone amp, the dr150s sounded a good 45% better.

I wanted to check this out as i too thought his headphones sounded a bit 'cloudy' they sound sooo much better with the e5.

I have the dr50's and his dr150 sound much better. the dr50's e5 amped sound about 20-30% better IMO & his dr150 sound simply amasing :( much richer.

Hope that helps.

EDIT:- the E5 fiio amp is about £12-£20 and is WELL worth it.

Sry, I meant Angel Rex. He thought his friends DR150's sounded much better when he tried them with his E5, 45% better, I think he said. That was from a TV though.
