Hi guys.

Next weekend I'm going up north to see a mate. Never travelled this sort of distance before. What day would you say is best to go up the m1, Saturday or Sunday? Or does it not make a difference? Route will be m3, m25, m1. Not sure when I'm leaving yet.

Nooo don't go on the M1!
I went to Newcastle a few weeks ago and went M3 > M25 > M1 and the 50mph average speed checks on the M1 around Luton/Milton Keynes really annoyed me. On the way back I went home via A43 > M40 > M25 > M3 instead.

Doesn't matter what day you go, as long as you leave early in the morning or late at night.

Go on the M40 normally empty wide road, pretty boring but you can get to the M42 in less than an hour from the M25 then M6 toll towards Manchester or carry on on the M42 and rejoin the M1

Best option less M25 and less M1

50mph average speed checks don't really bother me that much. Just want a nice simple route. Just wondered if traffic tends to be worse on either day really.

And i'm travelling from Farnborough to Ossett. Possibly stopping off in Sheffield on the way, so thought M1 would be simplest and best bet.

I'd defiantly go m40 to avoid the m25, you could go cross country to get to the m40 and avoid the m25 altogether, then listen to traffic reports or a sat nav with traffic and choose m1 or m6 on the day

Hi,

I'm doing Bolton to Farnborough and back every week at the moment. As long as your drive outside the rush hour the M25 around Heathrow is not a problem. Therefore I really wouldn't worry about a weekend. This week due to the M40 being closed I was forced to go down the M1... yes the roadworks are annoying especially with all the additional traffic from the M40 using the road and breakdowns in the counterflow. So... you are going to spend 20 miles or whatever it is sat at 50MPH ... is that really the end of the world? The M1 takes you next to where you want to go... therefore is diverting to miss the roadworks actually going to save you any time?

My advice, check www.highways.gov.uk before you go and if the M1 is looking okay... take the easy route.

M25 will be fine at the weekend IMO, done it a few times myself going round to Essex.

Cross country north of Farnborough is a PITA.

Yeah M25 is fine early in the morning, the M1 is 50mph from Luton to Woburn - it doesn't add too much time to the journey at all.

I wouldn't have thought the day would make a huge difference to this but starting at the right time tends to have more of an impact when I've driven from here back to Edinburgh - if I start early enough I can avoid the majority of the traffic in London normally so if it's anything similar there then timing might matter more than day.
