Is the car visible from the road so that when driving past it flagged the ANPR stuff in the police car? That would likely flash up as an untaxed/non-SORN (and uninsured?) car so they may then have turned round and stopped for a closer look.
Do the DVLA ever send the Police out to check?

If that's the case, why don't the DVLA automatically SORN a vehicle the day the tax expires?

i have had a bike sorned since 2001 and a car since 2007 , they have never been to check
chances of that being due to DVLA are slim to none, I had my car fully taxed and yet untaxed according to the DVLA computer for a full month before, didn't even get stopped by any coppers.
* somehow their computer system managed to give me 1 month less tax than it should have, my tax disc was correct but their system had it down as expiring a month earlier but it never sent me a reminder???
