Just wondering who's been following this amazing series from america. Sadly the last ever episode is set to air in the states tonight, and i for one will be very sad to see it go, no doubt a tear will be shed.
For those who haven't seen nor heard of it i urge you to grab a copy of season 1 and enjoy.
Basic synopsis:
Based around small town Texas, and the people who live in it. American football is used because their obsession with the sport is creates interesting character dynamics and allows them to explore various issues going on there, as well as to give the show a central narrative direction.
Centrally it is a character drama, and a really good one at that, with an ensemble cast of high school students, their parents, the football coaches, the people who are into the sport, with amazing writing, and hugely satisfying characters arcs and development.
Then it uses that to tackle stuff like the failings of the education system, the struggle during adolescence, trying to make it for yourself, dealing with expectations, class, race, parent-children relationships, loads of stuff like that. It is about football in a similar way that The Wire is about drugs, it is, but it is so much more than that.
Now, you really do not have to be into american football at all to 'get' this show, i wasn't when i was told by many many people to watch it, but certainly am now. It really concentrates on the relationships between everyone and the town, the football is really a back story. WATCH IT NOW!!!!
