So I just got a Samsung Galaxy S, and I've no idea what to do first! Is there a guide to how it all works and what the best route to go down is concerning mods/apps?

I'm coming from BlackBerry so I don't really have a clue!

Thanks :D

Not a SGS owner myself but XDA has a wiki page for it here
There is a section on flashing ROMs and the like on that page. Probably be worth reading the page in it's entirety first before diving in, or heading over to the XDA forums and asking for help there.

See also this thread on XDA, lists all the different ROMs and has links to 'how to' threads and articles.

Mine suffered hugely from lagging on both 2.1 and 2.2. I'd recommend installing Quadrant (a benchmarking tool), then rooting it with the Z4root app, then installing OCLF One-Click Lag Fix. On my SGS this nearly doubled the speed and made it noticeably faster at opening apps.

Make sure Download and Recovery modes work before you do anything invasive. It's detailed in the wiki page linked.

get three button modes working, install a clockwork recovery, install custom rom, root it and then get voodoo kernal and lagfix

This will give you better battery life and gets rid of samsung bloatware

Read xda-developers to find out how (read guides twice before attempting anything as you void your warranty as soon as you start)

Get some good apps on the phone.

I found these apps useful in making the phone into a smartphone:

1. Chrome to phone
Handcent SMS
2. K-9 Mail
3. Your Orange (if your on orange, networks have their own app to check balance)
4. Nimbuzz (an instant messaging client that can connect facebook chat, Windows live messenger etc)

Trade it in for a DesireHD? :p

yea trade it for a real desire HD aka Desire HD2...Not for a poor excuse for a desire update;):D

The HTC Desire HD2 is an update of the large-screen droid with a powerful dual-core 1.2GHz CPU of the Qualcomm 8260 Snapdragon chipset. The screen resolution will be bumped up to qHD (540x960).
The slide says 3.3-inches for the diagonal, but we're guessing that's a typo and should be 4.3" S-LCD unit, just like the original Desire HD. The camera on the HTC Desire HD2 should be 8MP with 1080p video recording and LED flash.

im stuck on 2.1 with my virgin mobile galaxy s. no update via kies, its a known issue that it seems they cba to fix. anyone link me to an easy guide to getting this onto 2.2.1?

Did you actually test if the 3 button modes work? if they don't and something goes wrong the phone is bricked and you'll have to send it to get fixed.
