My GF has been going on all night about Karma being all to do about 'feelings' and I've said it's all to do with 'cause and effect' malarky (gimme a break ... I'm trousered ;)).

So to summerise .... What the hell is Karrma

Al ;)

IMO I would say something that you like to be misfortune-ate about someone else then something misfortune-ate happens to you

in Indian religions is the concept of "action" or "deed", understood as that which causes the entire cycle of cause and effect (i.e., the cycle called saṃsāra) originating in ancient India and treated in Hindu, Jain, Buddhist and Sikh philosophies

from wikipedia*

I would like to believe in karma, but I can't come up with a convincing mechanism through which it could act.

If you're nice to people, they'll tend to be nice back. So how you treat the world correlates with how the world treats you. If you (mis)take this for causality, you can name it karma, but the mechanism eludes me.

I say it's to do with an 'action' and a 'consequence'.
A learning experience if you like.

I.E .... I try to grow carrots but I don't water them .So my action of not watering the carrots has lead to no crop being produced (the action).
I then learn from this and realise that I need to take action by watering the carrots to grow. Therefore my action has lead to the consequence of a crop being grow,

Am I right in thinking this or have I got it wrong

It's the concept that moral justice is enforced by inescapable laws and that all evil is ultimately punished and all good rewarded, either in this life or the next. Some belief systems say that God enforces it.

Karma seems to me like a nice concept - sometimes I'd like to believe that good things will happen to good people and bad people will get their just desserts but I can't quite believe that there's some mystical force impelling all of this. I can't entirely rule it out as there's not enough evidence to say either way but I'd rather suspect it is as you believe cause and effect of sorts - if you're generally a nice person then people are more likely to respond to you in the same way, occasionally you'll be taken advantage of but overall you should come out ahead.

However if you were to only be nice because you believe that it should come back to you then I feel you'd be slightly missing the point.

That is how I understood it, well apart from the God part as I am not religious.

When I split up with the ex, many friends told me that due to him being so nasty about it he would one day get his comeuppance. Whether it is true or not I have no clue but it is a nice idea. :D

It's based in religion as stated and also functions like religion. If you believe in it, it makes you feel better even though it's total bull****.

However, logically, if you are nice to people you will have less enemies and more people to rely on in times of need. So while the whole magical aspect of Karma is waffle, being nice to people gives you more options than being a *******.

Yeap - that's a good definition^.

At the end of the day it's something that everybody realises is rubbish when the step into the real world. Evil people continue to get away with crap and will always do so..

Karma is something that I hope exists, but in actual fact, probably, does not.

I believe that what goes around comes around, i.e. treat people people badly and people will treat you badly etc. Not through some spooky spirit or some made up rubbish though, just if someone treats me well I am likely to treat them well back!

Tis the rule of 3-fold, what goes around comes around, if you go around doing bad things bad things will happen, and the other way around to.

At least that was what I was told it is!
