Hi,
After a few problems with my car we've put it down to needing a good service.
I work about 5 min walk from a kwik-fit centre and they're roughly the same price £130.
Is there any reason i should avoid going to them? or are everyone pretty much the same for a service?

I'd want it to be significantly cheaper than dealer or decent Indy.
If kwik fit charge the same then I'd be off to indy or dealer tbh.

£132 and can book it in for monday. £120 from the garage closest to my house but that then means a 45 min walk to work which i don't think i can really leave work for over 1hr.

First of all, what car is it?

Secondly, do you know exactly what this service is going to entail? In all likelyhood it'll be absoultely nothing more than a oil + filter change a quick visual inspection. As far as I'm aware, National tyres will do this for a fraction of the £130 you've been quoted at kwik-Fit and should almost certainly be able to do it while you wait.

Neither are going to be what I'd consider to be a 'proper' service, so why pay 'proper' service money?

It's a full 12 month service and from the list(below) a lot of it is things that you can check if they've done it.
The service is going to be:

Oil and Oil Filter Replacement
Fluid Levels Check and Top Up
Brake Fluid
Anti-freeze Coolant
Windscreen Wash
Power Steering Fluid
Essential Checks
Lights
Windscreen Wipers
Battery Condition
Charging System
Exhaust Condition
Tyre Tread and Pressure
Full Brake Check
Steering Check
Shock Absorbers Check
Suspension Check
Auxiliary Drive Belt Check
Wheel Alignment Check
Wheel Bearing Check
Wheel Balance
Brake Fluid Condition
Replace Fuel Filter (Diesel)/Spark Plugs (Petrol)
Replace Air Filter

From personal experience years ago I would walk 10miles home rather than take it Kwik Fit.

This.

I used them for an AC top up last year. My AC worked, although not very well. I went back to get my car an hour later and they said there's a leak in system and I'd need to go to a proper AC place to get it fixed. They sent me to our local one, I explained and the bloke laughed and said he'd bet it was ok as KF are monkleys and dont know anything. It was all fine KF just did it wrong, it was only £40 to sort it.

From my previous experience regarding Kwik Fit, I would'nt even trust them to inflate a bicycle tyre let alone go anywhere near my car.

The problem with any garage (or any business for that matter) is that it is as only good as the staff that work there. Remember that Kwik-Fit are absoultely massive. Just because you had a bad experience at one doesn't mean that they are all idiots.

I have had more than one bad experience with them, and with several different branches.
I guess they were featured on watchdog just for the free publicity;)

Trouble with places like Kwik Fit they aren't all fully trained Technicians, a lot of them are tyre fitters who can change oil and filter ETC. Hence why your not always getting the best.
I'm not saying they are all like this....

Once a business gets to the point where employees are doing the hiring and firing its hard to monitor quality.

You start ending up with mates of mates etc, me personally i wouldnt let them take my tyre pressure, i dont mind having them over for a free air con re gas though :D, or an MOT those at least they do properly.

Can just see you driving the Bentley to get your free re-gas :D

I'l tell you what my secret method is, i take the Jag or whatever in and keep the bod talking, 8 times out of 10 he forgets to take the before temperature, i then moan at the end i cant tell the difference and then spend the rest of the day buzzing over my free re gas :D

Its the same with McDonalds, if after eating 3/4 of a big mac you moan that it was cold, the replacement always tastes better cos it was free :D

I imagine that the vast majority of Kwik Fitters are trained, but 'only' to a NVQ Level 2 or equivalent standard (effectively making them 'fitters' but not 'proper' technicians. It is difficult enough to find work in a back street garage without any qualifications behind you, let alone a national place like Kwik Fit.

That's a bit risky. I'd be far too paranoid that they'd add a bit of 'secret sauce' to the new burger while I weren't looking :D.

Another one is to park in the "Grill waiting" bay, sit there long enough, bod comes out to query you being there, you reply wheres my ****ing Big Mac or similar.......

Not done it myself, but was a passenger when a friend did just that - he got his Free Big Mac! :D

so its an oil and filter change for £130.

what is your car and what is the actual problem it has?
