IT jobs.....what do these terms mean????

Just browsing through IT jobs and coming across a few terms which i'm unfamiliar with what they actually are (what they entail).

What does Helpdesk/IS environment actually mean? Obviously I know what Helpdesk environments are like, but what is an IS environment? And what does that incorporate?

Also, when referring to specific systems I've seen SMS mentioned a fair bit, what is SMS? I know what SMS is in the terms of mobile telephony, but is it something different in an IT job?

It might mean IIS?

Oooops sorry, my bad. Usually bang on with my use of the English language!
Its because I changed the title after I'd wrote it out to read differently and I hadn't checked it!

And no, it's not IIS, i'm aware of what IIS is, it's definately IS!

When I worked for Essex council I worked on the IT helpdesk and the entire dept was called IS, Information Services. Was basically tech support for all of the councils IT woes.

It's probably the companies way of making the job seem more attractive than IT helpdesk :p

Information Systems. The bit that is delivered to the end users, often a bespoke application or serious off the shelf app. Normally looked after by IT.

SMS is now System Centre Configuration Manager and is a Microsoft server app that does a whole raft of things from patching, installing software and even re-imaging Windows.
