Hi there

I am one out of two lucky EVO owners to have had their car selected for R&D work by Forge Motorsport. They have a lot of sucess in fabricating parts for GTR's and now want to get involved on the EVO X scene too. The are aluminum fabrication and have an EVO X FQ-300 which they are developing a lot of parts on for 3-4 weeks. They then want my car after this for a week to make sure all the parts they designed easily fit onto another EVO X without need for re-jigging. They will also do before and after power runs to see if a 360 benefits at all.

The company doing the work tend to supply parts to tuners as are mainly a manufacturer, they are:-

They plan on doing the following and would appreciate if you guys can help in explain what each part does, I've taken a good guess myself so just either need you to let me know if I am right or wrong:-

Intake - Obvious, I guess they will just try an improved design.
Intercooler with hardpipes - Is this the same as an FMIC? If so how will it improve power etc?
Brake lines - Better brake pedal feel?
Clutch line - Not got a clue, what will this do?
Short shifter - This is so needed on the EVO, be nice to have short throw like the Subarus have. :)
Catch tank kit - What is this?
Coolant hoses - Yes for those who like a flash under bonnet?
Coolant tank - What is this?
Power steering tank - What is this?
BOV - Something to hold boost and give a more flutter/whoosh sound.

I am told the value of the parts and work is in the region of 3-5k and they will give me all my stock parts back as well. It will take them 3-4 weeks to develop the above on the FQ-300 and they will want my car for just a few days to make sure all fits fine and I get to keep everything they fit along with my stock parts. They shall be doing a before and after dyno at Powerstation but they will not be remapping.

Needless to say I am rather chuffed I get a load of parts I can sell on or if they make my car considerably better leave on and potentially increase its value.

Anyone here heard of Forge and know what some of the above kit does and what the benefits are?

Make sure you are clear on what happens if it goes wrong and watch the small print as they may tie you into certain servicing or running instructions. Lots of tuners do this as it's a cheap way to evolve parts but it can be a story of hell if done badly. I'd want to see something that secured my car should it go pop due to their activities.

They are pretty established for this exact type of work, bespoke ally fabrications. Most of it is engine bling to be honest.

They have always provided quite comprehensive intercooler kits so thats a good one to see in there. Not sure about the intake, maybe the intake pipe to the turbo or an airbox. I dont think they would be changing the actual inlet manifold, nor would I expect it to be a component they would include in their product range.

Brake and clutch lines will be replacements of the OEM items, sensible on an older car as the rubber degrades but not something you would really notice. Some cars have a tendancy to balloon if the clutch line gets hot during track work such that you cant properly disengage the clutch when pressing the pedal.

Catch tank will be for the breather system and provides a chamber for oil to drop out of suspension rather than routing back to the car inlet where it can build up over time.

I would imagine the clutch and brake lines will be braided. This will improve feel, as the lines will not flex or bulge at all under pressure. The clutch and brakes should feel more consistent under very hard use when the fluid is at higher temps.

Catch tank, usually oil and other fumes from the cylinder head are fed back through the intake at some point, this will remove this and the oil will be deposited into this small tank.

Unsure about the others though!

Congratulations on getting chosen, sounds fantastic as long as everything goes well!

Can you explain why you want this stuff on your car when you don't even know what it does?

If you don't know what things do, why on earth are you considering them? Is it just so you can say you have them on your car as a status thing? Because if you knew what the things do or are for or how they improve you'd know whether you did actually need them or not.

You're getting a load of parts that aren't proven to do anything just yet at the cost of chucking away your warranty if you have one and any reliability your evo has.

Because, if I read his OP right, he gets it all F.O.C. and a big performance boost to boot, plus can sell on all his old un-needed bits & bobs?

Why not!

If I'm wrong, I'm sure Gibbo will say.

Given his previous Mustang, I'm fairly confident Gibbo is not too worried by having a modded car.

It's free stuff that the company are providing. He doesn't need to know what it does tbh :p

I fail to see right now how the parts they are fitting will effect reliability. Note I said they *WON'T* be remapping the car.

Hence unlikely there will be any power increase apart from the FMIC. All they are doing is take possible weak oem/stock parts and uprating them where there is possible weaknesses and for bling.

Warranty wise if something breaks due to a changed item, simple, remove modified item, put stock item back, take car to Mitsubishi. :)

big performance boost to boot

From the looks of things, 95% of that list is going to be 'bling' rather than anything that is going to add some creditable performance.

Of course I still think that you'd be a fool to turn it down those. Free stuff is free stuff!

I know what most of it does, I also knows its worth quite a lot of money and lots of people put their cars forward for this, I was one of the lucky ones.

If it makes my car feel better then awsome alternatively I can simply remove all the parts and sell them. But most of the parts are items I've considered especially the BOV and short shift kit, now I'm getting them for FREE, happy days. :)
