Is this normal? also I have checked to see if it is definitely my GPU and it is some one mentioned to me it could be a capacitor havn't overclocked it everything is at stock

Its standard, so long as it isnt really, really loud, my 5850 did it, my 6950 does it and many many other cards do, it is capacitor whine and should increase and decrease in volume according to load and volts going through the card.

It's nothing to do with 'crap' components. It's just luck of the draw if you get capacitor whine, PSU's, monitors, graphics cards can all suffer from it. Turning on vsync might ease it.

They are and do not believe that. Happens accross all brands, they parts are designed to deal with electricity, noise emissions come second. So long as its not a problem...its not a problem.

Vsync and undervolting will help if its a real issue, also the quality of power getting to the card from a good psu matters too; my 5850 squaled like a little piggy with a bobbins psu, once I changed it got a lot better.

Use MSI afterburner and try adjusting the fan speed too. Stock 5850 is 55% which is quite loud. 30% on idle should be plenty, ramping up to 45%ish in game.

Had it with most cards except my GTX460 and 480. Was particularly bad on previous cards on game scenes with a lot of bright colours. I had one card that even whined when scrolling a white page in Firefox...

Mine whines as soon as something 3d needs rendering. So as soon as I enter a game they both start and it is sooo loud. I have emailed OCUK.

I've currently taken them both out for just a single sapphire 5850 as it is extremely loud :/

aye but yeah I did reduce the fan speed did help with overall noise but from what I've gathered its just one of those things I guess

I should also add the power supply im using is a thermaltake pure power 680w it was pretty good when I bought it back in 2007 but is it perhaps not giving enough power to my GPU ?
could this be what's causing my 5850 to whine?

Mine did it and I understand that all cards did it but mine did it very loudly. I RMA'd it and all good. My new one does it very quietly on some games.

yeah thats understandable that it would make a slight noise on some games but the squealing on minecraft was making me worry perhaps I should get on the phone to ocuk support and see what they think

Mine did and does that. Only happens when loading a multiplayer server though on my new card. Not when actually playing. However my first 5850 (before RMA) did squeal in Minecraft when loading and playing. If you ain't satisfied with it, send it back.
