First off its a Shell petrol station with the workshop/garage attached to the side of it.
I got into work just before 8am this morning and noticed the shop door was MISSING. Strange I thought, perhaps someone had accidentally smashed the glass. I asked the boss and he said the following happened.
3.28am he gets a call from the alarm company informing him that the alarm just went off (it also calls the police at the same time)
3.38am he gets to the garage (5 miles away so yeah he was fairly moving) and got there just before the police did to find the shop door busted open and a landrover discovery sitting running in the forecourt with the towbar and part of the rear chassis lying on the ground behind it.
There was no one there, and the cash machine was gone.
After reviewing the security tapes the thiefs had pulled up in 2 landrovers and a car, smashed the glass on the door, jumped in, tied a sling round the cash machine and pulled it out with one of the landrovers.
You could see the machine get pulled out of its mount where it was bolted to the concrete floor and fly round the corner and smash into the chest freezer beside the door where they kept the ice creams. It totally destroyed the freezer and another pull got it right out the door through what was left of the frame. You then saw them loading the entire machine into the back of the other landrover as one was now disabled from the sudden pull, and off they went.
The whole incident lasted just 3 minutes.
The damage wasn't that significant, a new door was fitted by lunch time and obviously the freezer will have to be replaced. Nothing else was really damaged, and the cash machine belongs to whatever company not my boss.
Police tell us both landrovers were stolen from aberdeen a few days ago.
The thing is, the joke i guess is on the thiefs. The machine was almost empty, only £140 remained in it, as it would have been due to be filled today at some point. All that effort for £140, oh to have seen their faces after they cut it open.
