BMW 520D SE - what do you reckon???

It's a fantastic car and you won't get a better package than this. Are you going to be able to spec any options?

Hi there.
No, not spec'ing any options. To do so defeats the purpose, a fantastic car, luxurious inside with good standard spec for a reasonable price with low emissions. Start to put options on and it very quickly makes it too expensive and the emissions go up quite considerably with the auto. I am sure the auto would be lovely but I have never had an auto before so would not miss it. Sure, Pro Sat Nav, Adjustable suspension, head up display, bigger wheels, the list goes on.... But by the time you've done on the options you've added 10k at least to the list price and that makes it too expensive for a/my grade at work and b/ the P11D value.

The way I see it, the 520SE in standard spec has all the kit I could ever want -heated bum included. Its got the bluetooth and USB interface. Leather, parking front and rear - and all on a dogs danglers car in the first place. I could have had a 320d or 330d Sport Plus instead (330d SP high emissions....). But whilst the 3 series are still nice cars, I'd rather have a 5'er any day, particularly now the standard spec has been uplifted.

I have ordered Sophisto grey with Oyster/Black interior. I hope I have chosen wisely but from your guys input, and the reading I have done on the web, the 520d is raved about. Even Clarkson likes it.

Grey is so boring. But then the F10 only comes in grey. Or grey. Or grey.
Oyster is very light, so have fun keeping that clean :D

6 cylinder refinement over 4 cylinder...

So get a 530d, which delivers the same fuel economy as the 525d, the same 6 cylinder refinement, yet more power and more torque and better residuals.

The 525d is not as powerful as a 530d nor as ecnomical as a 520d. Why bother?

To save £4250? :p

I guess so, economics.

Which explains the reason my brother in law got his, afaik, "his" company purchased 10 525d's.

It sits between the two, offering an improvement over the 520 in terms of performance & refinery but being £4250 cheaper than the 530 ?

I don't know about you, but I see more 525d's than 530's out & about, I'd be interested to know the sales figures for the f10 520d, 525d & 530d...

I'll have the £4250 thanks!

If only it were that simple, eh?

A 2008/08 525d M Sport Auto is worth £20275.
A 2008/08 530d M Sport Auto is worth £22150.

So suddenly your £4250 is reduced to about £700 a year additional outlay based on keeping the car 3 years. Against the backdrop of a near £40,000 car, this is absolutely nothing for what you get.

The 525d then, remains pointless :p

I see your logic, I would be interested to see if the sales figures match..... ?

I doubt it, sales figures are not based on logic which is why nobody bought a 330i as a company car despite falling into the same company car tax bracket as the 330d.

Very interesting colum by Harry in this month's evo about an Audi rep's comments to him in a bar that nobody listens to journalists when it comes to what they buy.

Its only a page, have a skim through it next time you're in the news agent / supermarket. Its right near the front of the mag.

Cheers mate - you understand how I read magazines :o, never buy them, read whilst at the supermarket / services. :D - I'll keep an eye out for it. :)

i do the same :D

i subscribe to evo, but usually end up browsing Auto Express / Autocar etc.. while waiting on the wife shopping :D

Think most men do it.
