Yesterday a recruitment agency contacted me to inform me of a new position.

The position itself sounds rather interesting. As for the company (all I know is that its a legal IT firm... Havent been given the name yet) I've been assured that it is very well established..... So far so good.

What concerns me is that (providing Im offered the role) they're offering a salary which is around 2k less than what I'm currently getting. In addition to that they offer a car allowance (they also offer company car) of £400 per month. This would actually raise my pay by 2k (and some change) more than I currently get.

I've never required a company car or car allowance. How does it all work?

To be honest I'm not too keen on the thought of taking a pay decrease (who would be). I've asked the recruitment agency to send them a copy of my CV. I think it'll be worth checking the firm out.

Don't go with a drop in pay unless there's a compelling reason (advancement of skills, better prospects for advancement, more stable than current employer etc) in so doing you devalue yourself and then have to climbe back up the salary scale where you go.

Sounds interesting and worth a look at least. Depends if the company is offering less pay but overall can increase your experience.

No experience of company car benefits to share, but I would be dubious about taking a backwards hit in pay for no real reason other than being contacted for a job.

If you aren't desperate, go for interview, sell yourself etc. Then state if you get offered the job you will not leave for less than you are on now, plus the car package?

You hold the aces being the one not desperate for a new job?

This is the main reason I though it would be a good idea to at least go along to an intview.

Wouldnt say I was desperate.... yet lol. Just think it would be good for me to have options.

Okay now I'm a little nervous. The recruitment agency have just contacted me again.

The firm would like me to come along for an interview this Friday. I've had to decline as Im away on that particular day. So will have to be next week.

Feels a little strange as Ive been with my current employer for almost 7 years..... Not sure what I'd do if I were offered the position.

Play it out mate. No harm in going to an interview if you've been with the same place 7 years. It will just refresh your experience a little.

See what they offer, make your decision from there.

You are already employed so aren't "looking/desperate" to get a job. Therefore you have the ability to review and decline any offers that may come your way to best suit your needs.

They may be so impressed with you, they might match your salary. Might even be worth mentioning in the interview that you are paid more and would only consider moving if they at least matched current salary.

The point is you have the control, not the people looking to employ you.

Post in the Motors section with details of the company car set up.

Also, you're unemployed and not desperate - this is a good postion to be in. Relax and think things through.

I noticed a company car thread in the motor section today... Gave it a quick read.

Right, a date has been set and I now have the full job description.

I've been asked to give a 10 min presentation regarding anything of my choice........ I have no idea what to talk about.

Had best get my thinking cap on!

The rise of the Dacia Sandero.

Can only echo the advice from this thread, you're in the driving seat here so if they want you then they should have no problem matching your current salary.

At one interview I gave a 10 minute presentation of the first Marathon I ran and it was coincidental that the 2 women who interviewed me were training for a 10k.
That resulted in talking about training for 20 minutes and I got the job.

Nice.....

So I need to find a common ground then!

This is going to be interesting!

I already work for a firm of solicitors.... I'll have a word with one of them

Hmm, that's what I meant but it was a crap joke, sorry.

Do your presentation on what you feel is something that will be interesting or different but definitely suitbale for the people who'll be reviewing it. If you can do this with something you know a great deal about and are also passionate about, it makes for a very compelling presentation.

Just talk about something you are passionate about.
When I first showed my presentation to the wife I had got half way through it when she pointed at the clock behind me and I had talked for 30 minutes  and I had to do some extreme editing.
I once did a presentation on sharpening a pencil that lasted 1 hour so talking about something you know is easy peasy.
Remember that the real reason for the presentation is to keep it interesting, try not to say 'erm' a lot and to definitely keep it under 10 minutes (do not go over unless they start talking to you about it).

Obviously talk about something you're interested in or passionate about and that you could confidently answer any potential questions on. One of your hobbies, a holiday away, a place you like to vist etc.

If you can involve the interviewers then it might be a good idea. Give them something to pass round or have one of them volunteer for something. Rather than just have them sit there for 10 minutes while you talk at them.
