iPhone 4 data quirks, phone or vodafone?

I have an iPhone 4 on vodafone and have noticed some quirks with the the cellular data performance ad I'm not sure if it's vodafone or the iPhone

I travel a lot in and around London and there are regular occasions where I have full signal and 3G, yet the data either endlessly timesout or is painfully slow.

I assumed this was the network being overloaded etc, however 9/10 times my work blackberry (8900, so edge only) carries on without losing a beat sending/receiving emails

So, iPhone or vodafone to blame?

Got the same problem with o2 with my iphone 4, taken the phone into the Apple store to test which come back ok, but they recommended I could try a new sim, done this weekend and will monitor over the coming days.

People were I work have o2 with the iphone and not had the issues I`m having, they have the odd slow down which is expected.

Apple did say if still have problems pop back and they may need to change the phone, might give o2 a call first to check there systems / my account.

Same on Vodafone 3GS.

When at the football with ~15k others my internet grinds to a halt whereas my dad's BB works fine (Slower than normal but not by too much).

:(

Conclusion: iPhone's data uage = fail

I have the same problem - iPhone 4 on Tesco pay monthly plan.

I keep meaning to phone Tesco about it but since it doesn't happen too often, I keep putting it off. Might give them a call tonight.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has had this problem and managed to get it resolved.

And how far are you all from your local UMTS (3G) antenna?

no one can expect full 3G signal, all of the time when they're shifting from location to location. If your signal drops, so do your speeds. That's a wireless telephony network for you.

It's a common problem on O2. I always have full 3G signal (or so it reports) but the internet is so flaky in London.

Get exactly the same problem on my iPhone 4 with Vodafone in Leeds. Also had the same sort of issue with my Nexus One and Desire HDs. It's very annoying.

Same. The vodafone signal in Leeds city centre is very patchy, its great outside the centre, and way faster than O2 ever was when I was on my 3GS, especially in LS10 where I work. Edge is often the best I can get in the centre, thankfully Im only in Leeds City centre for a total of an hour a week so its no issue for me, but annoying all the same.

I can accept that when on an intercity or Eurostar train data will slow down, but to give you an example of what i'm talking about, i often have full bars and data still doesn't' work, when standing still outside in Canary wharf london. Switching off 3g onto edge usually makes it work, albeit slower than it should.

I just wish the networks would offer a premium tariff with priority data!

My original iphone 4 on orange was fine no data problems whatsoever, however after losing it, getting a new iphone 4 and new orange sim I now and again have the problem of despite having a full 3G signal it just won't work unless I restart the phone.

Going to try what was suggested here and get a new sim and see if that makes a difference if not, will see about getting the phone changed as something isnt right, I definitly did not have any issue with my first iphone 4.

I find the connection sometimes go stale.

Quick thing to usually get it going again is turn Airplane Mode on, wait a few seconds until the carrier disappears from the settings screen, then toggle it back on again. Data should then hopefully work for you.

Yup same here. Always full bars but connection times out and Safari complains it isn't connected to the internet.
