Just wondering how things work?
Say if I bought a car without tax (has MOT) and would be looking to buy tax straight away, how would I do this without having the V5 in my name? Or does it just get registered with the car?

Cheers m'deers.

It should already be SORN, unless the tax has litteraly just run out.

How old is the car, any how much much mot has it got? Does it have a decent service history?

A lot depends on the bigger picture, but it's certainly wise to wonder why there is no tax on it.

Still trying to find out more information (well just emailed the guy)

Been sitting idle since october, due to buying new car, but looking to get rid of, hence the low price below.
"test" has 4months. (guessing he means MOT)
2000 pug 306 1.8Meridian, seized breaks, and couple of scrapes on bumper £350.

Insure it and drive the thing home..
People worry far too much.
*This may not be perfectly legal.

If you want to be all legit about it, fill in the V5 with the old owner.
Tear off the section you keep.
Post the large section to the dvla
walk to post office
hand over tear off slip, MOT, Insurance docs.
pay for tax disc.
Walk back to the car
Drive home

Haha, cheers, but I thought I needed to prove I have insurance, proof I won't have if buying and insuring on the same day surely?

best you insure it now then and give yourself time for cert to come through the post..

or just drive it home anyway, like I said :D ;)

Or buy the car within post office hours and if you are going to buy it just get the bloke to tax it with his docs, but then if he isn't insured on the car any more this might be a problem.

It is a bit of a pain in the arse, I have to get a friend with a traders policy when I buy a car without tax.

Should be able to print off something if online, if not it will show up as insured on the NPC/insurers database when you go to the P.O.

The post office demand you have a proper certificate, also it can take a day or two to show up properly on the insurance database.

I've taxed cars with a printed off certificate a few times - in fact Swiftcover don't even send you a hard copy, you are expected to print it yourself.

Indeed. It could be the owner has fallen on hard times.

I am the fussiest car buyer ever as most people here know, I judge *everything* down to the brand of tyres because I think almost everything about a car tells you about the owner.

No tax tells you only one thing - the tax has expired.
