Man I love computers  :(.

The computer in questions was turned on this morning, used as normal, and then turned off. Go to use it this afternoon and not a sausage when I press the power button.

Off the top of my head the components in it are:

The oldest of these components was purchased February 2010 - all bought from OcUK of course!

Note that it is the same PC that did this last week, hmm.... http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18240909

So far I've tried the obvious - change the kettle lead and use a paperclip on the motherboard headers instead of the power button on the case. No luck with either :(. There's no LEDs lighting up on the motherboard at all (not even a mains standby one), no movement in the fans, no noises, no anything!

My gut instinct is that it's PSU, and to test that theory I'll be butchering my gaming PC tonight for its PSU :'(

Anyone care to comment with their gut instinct or comments/suggestions for the process of elimination?

If the PSU's not "jump starting" as I call it :), then it does look likely to be the PSU.
Trying another PSU would be my next step anyway so no point really speculating on what else it could be.

Edit: Come to think of it, I had an Enermax Galaxy 1kW die in a similar way.
Switched PC on and within 1 second and it cut off and tripped off the electric.
Changed Kettle lead, powered on then instantly cut off again and also tripped off electric but this time the rocker switch on the back wouldn't stay in the on position and it went to Component Heaven.

Your gut instinct sounds spot on.

If no power is going to mobo (so no LED) and no case fans are spinning up then its PSU.

You could get a molex powered fan, hook it up directly to PSU - if it doesn't spin up then it definitely is PSU :p

Saves you butchering the gaming rig

Well after abusing another PC (and cutting all my lovely neat cable ties :() I've proven it's the PSU. Worked perfectly with the other one! Plug the 12month old Corsair HX650 back in and absolutely nothing, not even the motherboard LED.

Soo....

The Corsair HX650 is in it's 7-year warranty so I'll get it replaced. But that's gonna take time, and time is something I don't have.

Current idea is to buy a new PSU (a decent one) to replace the dead Corsair HX650 and then when the warranty replacement turns up to either flog the warranty replacement or keep it as a spare - I had a look and my only spares are no-name 300W ones without any PCI-E plugs!

Problem is, I like my Corsairs and Seasonics... don't know what to buy as it's replacement! Before today if anyone had asked me to recommend them a PSU I'd have said either the Corsair HX series or the Corsair Professional Series, but now I've had one die! That said, it's managed to die silently and without taking out any other components.
Hmmm...

When you are let down by a product, it can be a bit off putting to buy one again any time soon.
When my Enermax died, I replaced it with a Corsair HX850 (coincidently :D)

Deep down we know that it doesn't happen too often but sometimes it just does, + that's what the warranty is there for anyway.

Sounds like you've not lost faith in Corsair, so maybe you could by one of the more common/popular/less expensive PSU's being used in recent builds so you can pass it on with minimal hassle? :)

Edit: Like the ones Stulid puts in builds^

XFX or Antec new true powers are all Seasonic OEMS.

Eh?

I don't have a clue about PSUs these days :(. I remember back in the day watching the THG PSU stress-test day by day and buying a Seasonic S12 600W on the back of it! That PSUs still going strong 6 years later!

These days I've bought a Corsair HX1000 and the now-dead Corsair HX650 (which is actually younger than the HX1000!). The HX1000 has been fine, apart from me accidentally putting both graphics cards on the same rail!

But as for what to buy now, I don't have a clue! :(

Hmmm...

Every PSU maker has odd batches... just look at the number of PSU's that tend to fail on these forums in a week period and you'll realise that basically every single company will need some kind of RMA...

If you trust Corsair, go with them :)

I am saying if you like Seasonic so much, you can buy one of those units and it is a seasonic designed and built unit.

TY for the help guys :).

Ah right, gotcha.

Whilst you get it replaced though, no point ordering another £100+ PSU.

Go for another quality make, get a 600W PSU, but don't spend more than £60 on it if its only going to be your back up.

So i would suggest:

If you don't mind it not being modular

If you want modular
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-031-OC&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=1098

Whatever I buy now is gonna be replacing the HX650 permanently. The repaired/replaced HX650 would be my spare or sold (depending on how poor I'm feeling!)

Ahh I see, sorry. Mis-interpreted.

I've seen a few people recommend on here to buy the XFX Pro 650W. But then it's what you feel comfortable investing in that matters.

I have a CoolerMaster M620, a 600W modular PSU and it serves me well, it was around £70 if I remember, got it from OcUK around 1 year ago now - you can pick them up pretty cheap off eBay. For the price, its a rock solid PSU.

Edit: Running a Phenom II 955BE @ 3.8GHz stable with a 4870 - I think it would be able to cope with anything right now, SLI and Crossfire are a push if you got a high end CPU though.

Giving the thread closure

Well the nice man from DPD came today bearing gifts...

What a chuffing big box! I'm gonna struggle to get this done!

Fortunately my helpful assistants then made an appearance...

Fortunately for my sanity the cats realised at this point that it had been a whole 30 minutes since their last sleep, and left me to get on with it.

For reference the AX750 is slightly longer than the HX650, and just to be annoying Corsair have changed all the modular cables meaning I had to replace them all!

So I get it all in and go to power on the PC.... not a sausage! No LED on the motherboard . Try the kettle lead I'd used the other PSU with and that doesn't work either! Off I go and grab a few different kettle leads... it turns out whatever is wrong with the HX650 means it's blowing the fuse in the kettle lead, and as I'd plugged the HX650 back in after the test PSU it had blown the fuse in that kettle lead too!

All working fine and dandy now .

Need to retrieve the HX650s box out of the loft now before RMA'ing it...
