Do you have it done religiously, sticking to manufacturer guidelines or do you stretch it out for as long as possible until things start dropping off? Or do you do it yourself, changing consumables well before the limits?

Mines up for doing as it's been over 14 months, but some people don't seem to bother at all.

Everyone 12k miles (which tends to work out at about ever year) or 2 years, as per the guidebook.

I do it religiously because I don't want to run my car into the ground. I don't know the knowledge to be able to do it myself so I take it to a specialist.

Do it myself every 8-10k miles for filters and fluids and throw it on the ramp once a week to give it a once over and check everything else

Whenever I get bored / have an afternoon free. Not often enough for me.. :p

Usually works out every 4-6k. Probably why I've had no engine related problems on my last 6 cars (apart from the ZS!)

Every year or 10-12k miles.

For the sake of some oil and an oil filter, is it worth risking your car breaking down? Not to mention when you come to sell it it won't be worth as much because you won't have serviced it on time.

I schedule mine to what the Haynes manual suggests, I can do most things myself so keeps the costs down and I know its been done properly :p
I have the bonnet up most weekends though just to do a visual check that everything looks ok.

Out of interest, how often do motorbikes need servicing?

Do it myself when I can be bothered, thinks it's been about 2 years since I last did oil or spark plugs, but then probably only done 6k since then.

But then it's a cheap cat-D car which is to get me around. It'll be used and abused with little care, until it starts breaking down.

All depends on the manufacturer and type of bike really, some Italian ones will want them checked more often than the Japanese models, but I'm not sure if that's the case anymore with recent Italian bikes..
Sportsbike's are obviously more highly tuned so require oil changes more frequently and Valve clearances checked every umm 14k I think...

But bikes are so easy to check and work on, most have an oil windows so you can see if its looking crudy, airbox and spark plugs are just under the tank, and a few bolts and you have all the fairings off.
Exhaust is all on show so you can see the condition of that, and usually Titanium or SS so they don't fall apart.
Brakes are on show so you can just look at them to see how much pad material is left and most are 2 bolts and the caliper is off easily.
At worst is a 2 man job to help lift the engine out and onto a bench :p

Manufacturer says every 18k miles or two years. Only noticed that the last time i went to get it done. Still plan to get it done every 12 months though, service and MOT at same time.

i service it whenever it is needed.

i aim to do oil and oil filter every 6k.

i aim to do plugs, air filter, other ignition bits, annually.

brake fluid every two years.

Every 10k as per the book which at the moment tends to be about every 9 months.

I double the frequency on some stuff though like plugs which I do every other service rather than every 40k and air filters I just change every service for the sake of a few quid.
