Hi Guys,

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement palmbook for my 2009 (pre-update) white Macbook?

Its had 2 replaced under warranty so far and they last about 6 months each, but they wont replace anymore and Apple want £112 for changing it when their parts price is £17 - but they wont just sell me the part.

TIA,

Alex

This might be the right part, although it looks pretty expensive.

How long have you had this new palmrest? I would argue that the new part should have 12 months warranty. You could also try arguing that the product is not fit for purpose. As it has been replaced so many times before it seems that they have accepted that it is a design fault. I don't know too much about this but I'm sure google will help you with the law and where you stand.

I've tried that line but Apple repairs only have a 90 day warranty and I last had it changed in June. The Apple UK policy on this repair is also only one new palmwrest to be issued, any more and its considered user damage.

They do admit that its not ideal, but the guy in one shop I spoke to said "Thats why the new one is all one piece"

Which was useful....

If it is the little bit of plastic that peels away get Apple on the phone and don't get fobbed off. They should (read: will) replace it out of warranty. It is a known fault.

They should replace the full upper deck with one with stronger plastics. This is what they did for my wife's 2007 MacBook.

The surround around the screen does seem to have been replaced with a stronger one but the palm wrest area is the same cheap stuff as before.

I've only tried on the phone once and got told I had to visit the Apple store to discuss with them the repair. However I'll give it another go today and let you know how I get on.

Thanks for the reassurance.

Ring again and ask to speak to a manager. If they try to fob you off with going to a store, tell them you've tried that. If they still persist that it's out of warranty, tell them you expected the original top cover to last the realistic life of the laptop, not have to keep replacing it every year or so.

My old macbook had the same issue and I had no problems getting it replaced out of warranty.

I had my 2006 top case replaced once for the discolouration and I think twice for the splitting. I did have 3 years applecare however. IMHO Apple really should fix it for you, was that an actual Apple store you were in? Did you speak to a manager?

It was the store manager I spoke to in the Apple store, both at Bluewater where I had the repairs done, and Brighton where I live.

I've tried again this morning and the guy I spoke to on the phone ((44) 0844 209 0611) said they might be willing to replace it out of warranty but as its a weekend he couldn't put anything through, or get permission, and I'll get a call back on Monday morning.... we will see!
