Joining the Army as an Officer?

I'm only a LCpl, so no mess bills, or mess meetings for me.

Fortunately, we've not long got a new SQMS, and a block Cpl who are both all oer it, so things are getting sorted, slowly, but at least they're getting done.

As for the water, I have no idea what went on there. But it's sorted now, so not an issue to worry about anymore. For now anyway lol.

Im a Lieutenant in the Army having commissioned from Sandhurst 2 years ago. Any questions your welcome to PM me.

Its a great job with an immense amount of satisfaction but as with all careers in the Armed Forces you get what you put in.

RAF brat and loved it, dad was an officer.

Grew up in cyprus basically :D

Wanted to join the Army, both my brother and one of my sisters joined up and became Staff Sargents.

I wanted to go in as a tank troop commander, but then long term GF as others have mentioned and such at the time soon put an end to that vision.

Dad loved his time in the RAF did over 35+ years in the end being called back in for the 2nd Gulf war.

My Sister did 15 years then came out to start a family.
Brother did 25 years and left to start his own company.

My other sister and I both choose civy street.

Few questions.

Although the minimum fitness requirments seem ok, do you need to be much fitter to avoid dropping out (excluding injury).

What is the daily routine?

I smoke and while i could cope without, i would rather not. Do they let you indulge during the hellish first term?

What other info is worth knowing?

Born in Hannover, lived in Bielefeld, Bunde, Verden, Rheindahlen. Dad was based in Germany for almost all of my young life.

Boarding school in the UK from 8 - 13 and back to Germany every holiday. I must say it was a privileged childhood...the army knows how to entertain its youngsters :D.

Born in Hanover, lived in Iserlohn in Germany, Belfast, Colchester, Camberley, Larkhill, Woolwich, etc. Boarding school in UK from 8-18.

Never wanted to join the army but loved being an Army Brat and wish I could afford to give my kids the childhood the army allowed me to have.

A few years in the Army as an officer tends to be a qualification much in demand in the "normal" world.

I was at boarding school until 18 also, don't know why I typed 13.

In the UK we were at Shrivenham, Camberley and Maidenhead.

The things the army laid on, especially at Rheindahlen, would just never happen now. Tennis tournaments, scuba diving lessons, sailing courses, paintballing, 4x4 driving, SA80 firing at the range (.22 adapted unfortunately :p) socials by the bucketload...all gratis. Incredible. I feel like an old man saying this but....those were the days!

Used to run around the 'camps' playing army with cap guns and generally screwing around all day long in the holidays. And having so many other people your own age and in the same situation made it easy to make friends. Watching Monchengladbach FC on a Saturday...ahh so much fun!

Go as fit as you can be. The fitter you are the less negative attention you draw to yourself. The personal fitness tests can be trained for very easily and a mere pass is the minimum standard expected + if you are that poor at running a mile and a half you would struggle with some of the hardest days I have ever had to complete. Aim for 9:30 or less on the run and your starting in the right zone.

The daily routine of time at Sandhurst? Almost every day is different however the first five weeks are pretty hellish I got an average of 3 hours sleep a night using about 7000 Calories a day (I lived opposite someone who was obsessed with calculating how much we had used).

A huge amount of people smoke don't worry about it however if your worried about your fitness quitting could help?

Been reading around this role for the past day or so. Certainly looks interesting albeit VERY challenging :O
