Is this an ok way to put thermal paste on

Hi i just installed my new Fenrir Titan Evo and i wasnt entirely sure how to apply the thermal paste (artic silver), i just put some probably the size of a pea in the middle of the q6600 then just lowered the cooler onto it, which should have spread it out? Should this be ok? (havent turned it on yet as i done my back in lifting my pc

)

Pea is a bit too much think black pepper ball but check temps doesn't make a huge difference.

Should be ok mate you will know when you power up the pc if the temps a bit high.

damn got a problem, the fenrirs fan just kind of moves for a second then stops, then after a while just kind of twitches :confused:

Any suggestions?

Does the system post? Are you sure you plugged it into the correct header on the mobo? (it'll be labeled either on the board or in the manual).

As far as i know come CPU Fans dont move all of the time. i freaked myself out at college, one of the i7's wasnt moving. Turns out it doesnt move when its not under load.

Thanks guys, all up and running

Took me a while to get my system to start as i forgot to plug the power switch into the mobo

Idle temps of a q6600 at stock are in the 30's, is that normal? Also is there anyway to control the fan speed? want to put it up and start overclocking this beast

Temperatures are normal - indicating you've done a good job of installing the cooler/paste.

Most mobo's control the cpu fan speed automatically. Run prime95 and see if speeds up and gets noiser. There might be some options in the bios somewhere, usually in the power managment section, so have a look there.

If you want full control you can download something like speedfan, however those programs usually only work if you've got 4pin fans.

When I was running my q6600 on a DS3 there were a couple of fan options in the BIOS, selecting PWM made the fan turn on/off as required to try & keep the cpu temps at 45c. At stock speed my cpu fan would often barely move at all unless I was gaming or doing some other intensive task. When I started overclocking the cpu I disabled this setting & the fan just ran at full blast. also I think there might also me another setting which enables you to set what % power you want to go to the fan at a certain temperature, I think.

Starting off overclocking you might just want to run it full bore for a bit while you fiddle about getting a stable overclock then see about adjusting the fan.
