I don't think you can apply logic to things like this. It is about someone having an idea about what they want to achieve and they do it.

I'm pretty sure a mk5 GTi would have been cheaper but then the driver would be one of tens of thousands out there. As it stands they drive something that if not completely unique then pretty bloody rare!
