So, a little pet hate of mine and also something which may make the difference between getting through the first sift of application forms where people look for spelling/grammar mistakes. I'm no expert but the below examples are simple but often wrongly used.

advice = you can ask for advice, take advice, offer advice... you can't ask for advise, take advise, offer advise.

advise = you can advise someone about something... you can't advice someone about something.

their/there/they're-

their (possesion) ie: The OCUK customers can keep their forum.

there: Can you please leave that over there.

they're (they are): they're going to pick up their belongings and take them over there.

woman (think man): singular, the woman with the blonde hair stood out from the other women.

women (think men): group, the women went crazy when the topless woman walked in.

I know i'll get slagged off but this is more advice regarding common mistakes. I know for a fact that organisations such as Northumbria Police will instantly bin any applications with wrong spelling or grammar.

I see errors like the above as well as typos in magazines and books all the time. I have literally no idea how it happens so frequently, surely it means at least 2 people aren't doing their jobs properly?

You need to be able to spell correctly to get into the police?

Believe it or not, yes, I don't know how - my experience of the grammar and spelling within it is shocking. You don't need one single qualification to get in though!

apostophe:

this shows possession:

St James' Park (is crap ha ha)
Dan's thread
The kid's football it wouldn't be used if you said The kids had a football

I've always found sentences to be harder to remember than the spelling of the word itself!

A lot of aide memoires are more difficult than just remembering what you're trying to get right, unless you come up with your own version it tends to be that you're remembering two things rather than just one and because it was thought up by someone else it doesn't mean much to you. Although there are a few that help I find a lot are simply confusing.

It's frequently amazing how poor some organisations and media sources are in regard to their output. I know I've cringed before reading some of the press releases from where I work.

I'd agree with that. :D

Another other couple of quirks that irk me are "of" instead of "have", as in "I would have".

And "brought" instead of "bought", as in "I brought it in that shop".

Is it me, or is this thread horrible? ....i'm double checking everything i'm writing! You're correct though, some things are disgusting they are so terrible!

Horrible? You started it and anyway you're not capitalising your "I" as you should. :p

Normally I wouldn't bother but in a grammar thread it's probably fair game. Here's where any mistakes I make are pointed out...
