My sister is eventually learning to drive, she has £1,500 to spend on a car and the majority of insurance, I've been looking around at smaller cars for a grand and they are pretty much old and tired.

She is 30 so insurance will be reasonable for a first car £900 for a Ka Fiesta etc

I have been offered the following from a work pal

Mazda 626 1999 2.0 petrol 40,000 miles MOT 6 months, new CD player A/C etc etc for £500, it is a Cat C for a bumper 2 yrs ago that's not been fixed but is only dinked

Insurance for the Mazda is £1,100 ish but this way she can get a reasonable car and a years insurance straight away.

The only nagging thought in my mind is if I'm saddling her up with a financial burden?

What's your thoughts, I'm all for older bigger cars but this is my sister and logical thought and approach is way down the priority list

As far as I know those old Mazdas are rather reliable if properly looked after, heck they never seem to brake even if they aren't.

would u really want to put her in some thing that powerful for her 1st car ? i know she 30 but still

Powerful? ...it's a 2 litre with 125bhp ...it's also not big, it's medium sized. Generally I think people should try driving something bigger than a shoe earlier on, can't be a bad thing now can it. You have a very funny idea of big and powerful.

I think the Mazda would be a perfectly fine first car really, you know the previous owner too so you have some idea of where it's from ...and its 500 quid, Mazda are known for reliability, cheap and hopefully cheeful.

well to be fair i thought it would be more than 125bhp as its a 2.0l lol so guess it aint that bad

I have a 2001 Mazda 626 after I crashed my first car (megane coupe 1.6) a few months back. It's a good powerful car for what I need it for anyway. I've only been driving since Sept 2010 and I can honestly say that I would love a megane again. While the mazda is powerful, I just think that megane's handle better.

"1st car for my sister"

I'd need to see her first to know if the swap was worth it.

(Sorry, just couldn't resist. The thread title was just too inviting. :D)
