Has any you guys owned a GTX 480 and GTX 580 with nvdia standard ref coolers ??

As am thinking of buying one the cheap GTX 480 on ocuk for my HTPC and wondering how much louder and hotter the GTX 480 is compared to the GTX 580 at idle & load..

Not all 480s are born the same chaparral, for example the Asus one currently on offer doesn't have quite as silly temperatures/power usage as the early versions.

Thanks Zefan
Have you any idea on what the load temps are on these asus 480's ??

(I know different cases/room temps are going make everyones a little different)

Take a look here.

Still hot mind :D

If you're not going to be overclocking it then I'd say you're better off going with the 6950.

Don't think i be looking at overclocking as am already worryed enough about heat problems with putting this stuff in a small case

As i remember the heat problems from when i ran SLI 7800gtx's, x1900xt-x & 8800gtx in my old shuttle case,
I Didn't worry about the GPU temps as i was more worryed about seeing the hardrives in it hitting 60+c :p

But am pretty sure I be sticking with nvidia...(But may change my mind)

a 480 for a HTPC???

I bought one of the Asus 480's on offer. I am using it in a coolermaster 690, so airflow is good.
I have overclocked it to 800 core with normal voltage. During arma 2 and IL2, at 55% fan speed (I find this to be quite an acceptable noise level) the gpu hovers at about 72 degrees. Even after a few hours of gaming.
The Crysis demo pushes it to 85 degrees, but still at that very managable fan speed. I know I could get better temps if I turned up the speed, but I think the temps are very reasonable in these Asus cards.
At idle i use 35% fan speed which is inaudible and it idles around 44 degrees.

Very satisfied overall, I don't have a game that makes the 480 work hard really. Even Crysis runs with 8xAA at max settings at 1680x1050.

I was dead set on getting a gelid cooler before I bought the card, but I don't think its necessary now. Very happy

I went from a GTX480 (terrible overclocker, couldn't do 750MHz), to a GTX580, to GTX580 SLI, and then back to a single GTX480 (a good overclocker this time).

At 1920x1200, I decided that a single 480 was all I really needed. Sure, benchmarks run 20% faster on the 580 but I get bored of benchmarks after awhile. The 480 offers plenty of power for current games at normal resolutions, and at <£200 it is a steal.
