Bungie's follow-up to the Halo series is a massively multiplayer online first-person shooter, according to a source claiming to have knowledge of the game's development. That sci-fi shooter is currently named Destiny, he says, Bungie's original post-Halo franchise.

That source also claims to be a recently terminated contractor, part of a group of an estimated 30 non-salaried employees let go from Bungie. It's not uncommon for contract and temp employees to be let go after a project completion on the scale of Halo: Reach, but that source cited claims of "budgetary concerns" and alleges unfair treatment.

Update: Bungie responds to contract termination claims on its official site: "The claim is false. Bungie has never been asked to lay off any employees or contract employees by our publisher, Activision-Blizzard, for any reason. The talented professionals who grace our offices day in and day out are the lifeblood of Bungie – our most cherished commodity – and the unsubstantiated rumors posted today are in direct opposition to the culture and values that we believe make Bungie an exceptional place to work, and to call home."

The ex-Bungie employee says that Destiny, codenamed "Tiger," will run on a new Bungie-developed graphics engine and feature unique online connectivity and matchmaking technology. It was also bluntly likened to "WoW in space."

Bungie creative director Joseph Staten hinted at last year's Game Developers Conference Online that the independent studio might be building an online persistent world. Bemoaning that Halo players spent mere hours in the developer's games, Staten wondered aloud "Wouldn't it be great if we could make a world that was always there for you?"

The creators of Halo and Marathon are currently working on a multi-platform project for Activision Blizzard, part of a ten year publishing agreement.

Kotaku has contacted Bungie and Activision Publishing representatives seeking comment and clarification and will update with any response.

OH MY!!!! Blizzard working on a Sci Fi MMOFPS and now this?!?

Um... are you aware that says Bungie and not Blizzard?

Yes but if you have been following the development of the rumour...

Employees from Bungie transferred to Blizzard to work on there new MMO, Activision own 10 year publishing rights or something like that to Halo, so could there be a cooperation between companies to develop it?

Didn't you start the original **** thread about this garbage?

Tenuos link making to the max, you sound like the magick of the computer gaming world... Suppose it's proably fitting that it's a sci-fi alien related game :p

/tinfoil hat

ZOMG it's so obvious we will get a Halo mmo made by blizzard now, if not it was a government cover up!!!!! Aaaaaaa!!!!

As I mentioned last time this ridiculous "rumour" came up , blizzard have always, from day one, maintained that their next mmo was going to be a totally new IP. Halo is not a new IP, thus this is utter bunkum

Completely new IP or a new IP for Blizzard? Technically Halo would be a new IP for Blizzard.

Its just a fun thread, chill out guys. :(

Halo is a Microsoft-owned IP. Bungie lost all rights to the franchise when they bought themselves out shortly after Halo 3 was released.

I wouldn't worry about it. When/if it bombs Activision will try and shut Bungie Down just like they did to Bizarre Creations.

Having said that I've love a persistent online world when objectives and a living breathing world that changes depending on which side is winning. make it as big as WoW's world is with hundreds of players and you're onto a winner.

"feature unique online connectivity and matchmaking technology"

That isn't an MMO, that is an online FPS with a communal chat room. Global Agenda / Huxley.. etc.

Bummer, no World of Starcraft then :(

Thats what war did. It failed because the teams are never even. The winning team just gets stronger and stronger and people switch sides to be on it and eventually you couldn't go anywhere without being gang raped.

War failed because there is 1 end-game 5 man dungeon that is worth doing - which is the extent of its end game pve content, and has no end-game pvp content at all, relying entirely on the players to organise pvp for themselves - for doing which you are rewarded with absolutely nothing.

WAR had sone unique ideas such as public quests which i thought was great but personally I would have said WAR failed because it was ****
