could someone kindly point me in the direction of what id need in terms of an aftermarket fan for my hd3870x2.

much appreciated.

You'll be better off buying a 4850, which gives around the same performance, if not a bit more. An after market cooler for a 3870X2 will cost you more than what you could buy a 4850 for.

Unless you are prepared to get a cooler of ebay this would be the best opyion for you

think il save up and get a 5770 in that case, the gpu is the weakest part of my rig but i didnt mind so much as i wasnt going to be gaming but a friend got me signed up to steam and sent me HL2 and i must say im pretty impressed with pc gaming, definitely something im going to carry on with, problem i have atm is half an hour into a game my room gets really hot and i notice the gpu fan is pretty high so wondered about a cooler.

what is the general opinion on the 5770`s? are they still a good card?

You could just sellotape an 80 mm fan on top of the gpu's as this will defo bring down temp's . You could just take off the shroud and put 20 80mm fans on the gpu heatsink .

good suggestion, ive read about people stacking fans onto the original gpu fan to boost airflow, and even getting rid of the shroud for 2 vf900 fans i think they are but theyre £25 a piece so wouldnt make financial sense. think il just save up for a 5770.
