Going to the states at the end of June, and will be there at the time of the final shuttle mission so want to go and see it.

Anyone see one before, any recommendations to stand to get a good view etc?

Cheers

Kimbie

Can any of you people who have been give some recommendations? :)

I hope this launches 24th is my B-day id like to watch this! :P

We’ve all got our fingers crossed. There are now no more issues and the meeting to affirm the launch is to be held on Friday. Countdown is scheduled to start next Monday.

ATV Johannes Kepler has just launched from Kourou! This is very good news for you as that means it will be scheduled to dock with ISS on the 24th. NASA are looking at whether they can launch Discovery the same day. More discussions and decision should happen at Friday's FRR meeting.

@Blinkz. Enjoy it! It won't be a night launch like STS-131 (the one I was there for). Would love to go and do it all again now (a) I know what I'm doing and (b) I've got a much better camera for the job, but it just isn't going to happen. :(

Just read that it will stay up there for 3 months being filled with rubbish and then sent back to burn up in the atmosphere hopefully the big bits falling into the pacific.Going to be a few bin bags floating around,I hope they remember to properly recycle.

FRR set the date for the 24th! Makes my life easier instead of having to change lots of hotels haha, fingers crossed its goes!

Berserker, any tips for when I'm there? Where did you view it from?

Last night's briefing:

So we are set to go with launch on the 24th at 21:50 GMT (16:50 EST) and the countdown is set to begin at 20:00 GMT (15:00 EST) on Monday 21st. Fingers crossed that we finally get to go.

Hey Simulator,

What do you think the odds are that this time it'll launch on the 24th? Since you've been keeping your ear to the ground. I'll be honest, I've not watched that 50min video, so don't beat me up. Would it be safe to say if it's still go for launch on Thurs morning, then we have a good 95% of it actually going in the afternoon?

I've told the missus that we & the kids must go, and I'm about to book Thurs and Fri off work to make the 250mile trip up to Cape Canaveral, from where I live.

It'll be on NASA TV. You can find some pretty high quality links using google. AFAIK Yahoo! do a 500kb/s feed which I guess is pretty close to 720p and looks awesome.

BBC News will cover it. But their coverage is always crap. They'll wait for the Shuttle to be out of obvious view (around 3-5 minutes) and then assume everything is OK and switch back to whatever they were reporting before. So you won't see MECO from the onboard cameras and stuff, in fact you won't even know they've reached orbit. Also their anchors know **** all about the Shuttle's and their ignorance will drive you mental. I remember a launch a few years ago and the bloke thought that the SRBs when spent landed in the Pacific ocean... Never again.

/BBC Rant

Find a good NASA TV feed. Preferably not the link on the official NASA website as it will be low quality. Search around for a decent one.

It's all go for launch, there are no technical problems, the forecast for the week is looking good. At present there is no reason why the launch shouldn’t go ahead. I suggest that you keep an eye on these links before you leave:

There will be a preview of the weather at tomorrow’s press briefing at 10:00 EST.

Thanks !!! It's something that's gotta be done before they de-commision the shuttle program & its something that I'm promising to myself for the last 7yrs living in FL, that I must go see... Gotta pull my two young kids out of school for two days, but as far as I'm concerned...... This is educational :D
